1-35 M4A3 Sherman 105mm Howitzer, Ardennes 1944

Post by spock1701 »

Hi everyone. :welcome:

This is the first time I have participated in a forum Group Build, and I have to say it was much more fun than doing a build on my own, so I will try my best to participate more often.

I built Tamiya's M4A3 Sherman 105mm Howitzer variant from 2002. A good kit overall, but it certainly has its flaws, as all Tamiya kits tend to have. A better modeler than I could have fixed it up nicely, but when it comes to fixing kit flaws I am a total noob. Most of the flaws are covered, though, so no biggie.

The paints are Vallejo Model Air (Olive Drab and White) with some Winsor & Newton oils for weathering. I used AK Ultra Matte and Alclad Aqua Gloss for the varnishes.

Almost all detail painting was done with Vallejo Model Color, except for the tool handles, which are Tamiya XF-57 Buff.

I did my first bit of scratch-building with this kit. The tarpaulin covering the rear stowage is facial tissue stiffened with white glue. I think it came out pretty well for a first try.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

Great result mate - very well done!

Really enjoyed following the build and watching it come together - the stand-out for me is definitely the tarp and stowage on the rear deck - I keep coming back to have a look how you did that!
Cheers, Neil

Thanks, rodrant! I am pleased with how the camouflage came out in the pictures, despite my mistake with the filters.

I'm glad you like it, Tom. It was a highlight for me as well.

Oh, absolutely! My favorite battle of the war, just barely eclipsing Normandy. My next build is a Normandy build (my first historical one), but after that I plan on another Ardennes build.

Thanks to all for the kind encouragement during the build! I could not have finished so fast without your input.

Cheers! :thumb2:
