More than I bargained for....

Post by Su35 »

So have you ever gone to purchase a model from a person who is 'getting out the game' or 'thinning out their collection', and gotten more than you expected?

This week I had such an occasion.... I went to a guy who is concentrating on building WWII stuff, so was selling off all his jets. I spotted he had a HobbyBoss 1/72 Rafale B (a model I've been eyeing up in 1/48) and was asking a nice price for it, so I thought I'd jump on it. When I got there, I asked if I could see what else he was parting with to see if anything else took my fancy....

Whilst I'm looking at the ones he was selling, and looking specifically at one of the kits with a view to buy, he starts digging out some really old kits (some from the year I was born) and before I knew it, he was giving me some at no 'additional charge', as he didn't want the hassle of selling them. I felt a little awkward and overwhelmed, but ended up walking out with 8 kits and only actually paying for 2 of them. One kit was a Hasagawa Viking kit, which he told me there may be two kits inside, but he wasn't sure if it was complete. I couldn't see the wings in there for the second kit, but once home and looking through, they were actually there.... Turns out this is an old Airfix Viking from 1978! No decals for that one nor the Hasa Viking, but both models are complete with instructions, so I'm very happy!

The Hasa Mirage F.1 was already mostly built, but I figured this could be a good 'encourager' for my oldest to perk his interests in the hobby.

So here's my little score......

First the Vikings (Grey kit is the Hasa, White on right is Airfix)....

Then the others....

Has anyone else had more than you bargained for?

Good for you and you probably made an old modeller very happy even with eight kits for th price of two.
I usually walk out with two kits, but seem t pay for eight!!!
At a hobby show one year, got a fabulous deal on an expensive metal Mercedes kit that the seller let go for a song vs what it is worth online.....he knows these kits have a reputation for diffficulties and was really too scared to start it out!!
I had just made the Bugatti version, so we had a nice chat and I got a sweet deal

Nice haul! Not modelling related but I bought a set of axle stands off a guy and went round to his house to pick them up. I noticed a Washburn acoustic guitar propped up in the garage and mentioned that I played. 'Oh take it if you want I could never get on with it'' said the guy. I offered him some money for it but he wouldn't hear of it so I took home about 400 quids worth of guitar with my axle stands which the wife thought was a bit random.

Although he took the tenner for the stands.
Regards, Dave.

The interesting thing was that he was a relatively young guy, younger than me in fact. He had draws filled with part completed models, like a 1/48 Tomcat (Academy I assume but not sure?) and a 1/48 F-117, amongst others, but he just wants to concentrate on WWII stuff. I understand as time is a precious commodity these days, but just seemed such a shame for them to be in a draw, when he had appeared to do a good job with what I saw.

Haha. Nice! Similar story... I also play (bass mostly), and I used to breed some rare fish also (there is a point)..... A friend was clearing out their garage, and offered me a fish tank, as they just wanted it gone and the space freed up.... I go round there to collect the tank, and not only did I get lots of extra accessories and useful bits that I wasn't expecting, they walked out with a Yamaha classical, and insisted I took that too! I agreed to take it, but said I'd hand it on to someone learning after I'd spruced it up a bit.

Always nice to get free stuff!
