Ultimate Winter Wash - sealing with Aqua Gloss

Hi All

A quick question for those with 'egg on their hats' as they say.

I recently sprayed Ultimate winter wash onto my Elefant and after distressing it to my satisfaction I then sealed with a spray of aqua gloss. The following day I used Ultimate dark dirt wash (as I would normally) but when it came to wiping it away I found the varnish had failed to protect the whitewash and it started to come away from the hull.

I'm not complaining, to me the result is pretty spectacular, but is this something I should have foreseen? If its normal, I can rely on it in the future as a method for weathering.

This is no criticism of either product. We learn by doing!

Hi Stokesy, I prefer to use enamel products on Aqua Gloss. I think you should consider using a lacquer gloss before using water/clay based products on top. Aqua Gloss is an acrylic product and I only use enamels or oil on top from that point. Perhaps the water and scrubbing dissolved the clear coat?

Consider what happens with the paint. The paint sticks to whatever is under it, and the Aqua gloss (or any new coat) sticks to that.
The Ultimate washes don't stick to what's under them, they just sit on it, that's why they can be wiped off. So while the Aqua gloss sticks or bonds to the wash particles, the wash particles aren't holding onto the paint underneath. I would suggest multiple coats of varnish over any particle wash. First a light mist to "pin" the particles in places, without flooding them and causing them to move around (yes, that can happen ), then a heavier coat that forms the actual shell, that "domes" over the spots of weak adhesion caused by the wash, and then a third, medium thickness coat of varnish to level out any problems that think coats have when drying.
