Panzer I with Panzer III Turret!

Hi guys,

In my ongoing search of WWII Oddling Vehicles, I came accross this picture a while back.



Searching around I found that there was a lot of debating going on about the validity of this picture.
Recently, realising I had a turret left over from my Panzer III with Sig 3 build, I thought I could put it to good use for this conversion.
So I started digging again and found all this info on the vehicle.

I learned the following as subscripts to this picture:

"German tank school wood gas powered Fahrschulpanzer I Ausf.A chassis and a Panzer III turret armed with 3.7 cm (1.46 in) gun used for teaching three-man turret crew procedures."

and

"Panzer I Ausf.A mit Panzer Ill turm und Holzgasgenerator. Educational tank made on the chassis of the Panzer I Ausf.A with Panzer III turret and hull and a gas generator installed for fuel saving (1942/43)."

This Panzer I Ausf. A chassis is powered by a wood gas burner and is fitted with a Panzer III turret. It was used for crew training.

So it turned out to be a real deal.

I ordered this kit on ebay for the Panzer I chassis.



I assambled my turret.



Made some build drawings for the burner.



Which I modeled after this example.



3D printed a building mold and cut out the peaces.



And together with some spare parts built the burner.



Only later I found out that the burner on the PI wasn't round, but I didn't wanna start over.

Hi guys,

Big update here. Did a lot.

After I found out that my scratch built burner wasn't the right shape, I decided in the end to make a new one.
Made it with the 3D printer.

Here's a screen shot of the setup.



The Panzer 1 got in.



Building the hull.



Suspension finished.





Tracks finished.





Building the conversion super structure.





The 3D printed brurner detailed.



Burner attached.



Scratch built the tank that goes on the front deck.



Made the hoses from sprue.



The build finished.







Started the paint job with black primer.



Panzer dark grey.



This picture shows a vehicle without superstructure and a white turret.



I thought it might look more interesting to give my vehicle a white turret too.
So I did.



Applied a gloss coat.



And a clay based dark wash.



Flat coat applied and details painted.

Hi guys,

Finished the build!
For further weathering I used: Oil paints, waches, metal powder for metal effects, enamels for oil stains, washes for rust and pigments for rust, grime and dust.
