SU-100 SELF-PROPELLED GUN

Hi I will be building this Russian tank destroy the kit is not very well detailed and some of it is wrong so some scratch building req.



The SU-100 arrived in operational units in October 1944 and immediately became popular with Russian crews. It was able to defeat almost every German tank on the battlefield, only to be outmatched in 1945 by the King Tiger. Popular songs and movies reflect this popularity. It became instrumental in fending off German units during Operation Frühlingserwachen at Lake Balaton in Hungary, March 1945, and helped the great offensives in Eastern Prussia. Some were even found fighting in the streets of Berlin due to their awesome bunker-piercing capabilities, despite the fact they were never designed for infantry support. Like the SU-85, they lacked any secondary weapons and were conceived to fight in coordination with other covering units to deal with infantry and aircraft.

Made up the lower hull, I'v add some lead wheel wights


Cleaned and made up all the road wheel, the panel on the left has rivets they should be bolt so I'll replace them next and the panel on the right I'll remove and replace he grill._z.jpg[/img][/url]

Removed all the rivets and replaced them.





They look big but they are only 1.2mm bolts ?

Cut out the plastic grill and add a nice brass mesh one

You must be a gluten for punishment replacing all those rivets, so my hat off to you for having the patience to do it
I'm sure this will end up another Pete masterpiece and look forward to seeing it come together.

I'm also loving all the Soviet tanks being built here at the moment, I think I'm going to have to build another one soon

Hi Norm thank you, there is one or two Russian tanks at the minute, even my last one was and that was a Sherman, we well wait and see about the masterpiece

Hi the kit is not very well detailed and some of it is wrong these are some of the thing I'm change or adding

Removed all the rivets on the rear panel and replaced them with bolts
Add missing hatch handle
Add 2x missing brackets
Add 2x missing fuel lines


Replace the engine deck plastic grill and add a brass mesh one


Add missing handles on hullside
Add missing weld seam on the side turret



Add missing retaining bolts for front spare track links


Replace lifting rings


Add missing hinge pins to hatch doors

I'm getting more interested in the Rusky stuff from WW2 so

Hi got a bit more done today.

Replace the plastic lifting rings with cooper wire.


Made up the front spare track links and add the missing retaining bolts .



Fitted the spare track links and drivers hatch.



Fitted front & rear panels and all the hatches.


Used lead wire for the fuel lines and add missing hinge pins on hatch doors.





Made up the missing handles for the hull side and rear engine hatch fitted storage bin.



Drilled out exhausts pipes and fitted.
Fitted upper side engine grills.

Made up all fuel drum and fitted.


Added a wed seems to the side.
Fitted all the handles and the auxiliaries .



The last job was to redo one of the fuel lines .

Hi Norm, spot on with your observation it's pretty basic so I hope I've improved it, so thank you.

Fished the build all bar the barrel which has not arrived yet

Started by removing 4 bolts


Made up 2x right angle channels out of PE.



Made 2x tee uprights.


Used 1mm dia lead wire and flattened to make support straps x4






Add a couple of catches


Made up a new tow cable

The barrel came, drilled a 4 mm hole in the gun mantle and glued and then fitted to the hull, now ready for paint.

Hi Kev, thank you very much, you shuold have a go,blimey if I can get away with it( only just mind you) I'm certain a man of your calibre can.

I use copper jewellery wire .4 /.6/.8/1.0 mm of eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1x0-3-0-4-0-6 ... algo%3DPL. there lots of them.

The nut/bolts are 1/35 from Meng Model, there are 2 set, A Large & B Small I get them of eBay.

Hi Norm you have to individually cut them out and glue them sorry, no they cut quite easily, I think they look very effective.

Thanks Pete. They do look effective but I'll give them a pass at the moment because I need to learn how to paint and weather properly first before attempting to hyper-detail anything I build.

Hi Norm, I wish it was brush stroke free, I only use water to thin my paint,probably 20% and 2 coats, it's more luck than skill and it's all done with mirrors

Hi Mick I have little or no confidence in my painting ability,this is because I have to hand paint everything, I have severe Emphysema and I'm on oxygen 4-6 hours a day so a air brushing is big no no,I all so have other health issues and have to take a bucket full drugs some which give me the shakes.

Hey Pete, loving the build, half way through one of these little buggers myself so I feel your pain!! Only use the hairy stick myself too but I have issues with what shade of green to paint it.. Your colour looks great, what did you use.

I actually think that your hand painted finish looks superior to that of an airbrush - has a more realistic look somehow, maybe the way it reflects light - very, very nice!
