Packing your models when you move

Post by Fridgy »

Hi everybody,

So we are beening forced to move.

How do you guys pack your models for the move to minimise damage?

I was thinking to put them back into their boxes but some of mine are too big to do so.

I should stop building 1:32 models if im going to have to keep moving.......

Are they airplanes, tanks, etc.? I did a bit of experimenting for moving stuff when I moved recently. How far are you going?

Ahhhhh, just let the friendly movers pack them up for you and then move them to your new abode.
After, you will have lots of new modelling work to do...repairing everything that was destroyed

Seriously now this will depend on how far you have to move and if you can do a lot of it yourself
Ok, so I packed all my models in their boxes or small boxes with bubble wrap, paper supporting wings and what not, delicate stuff removed in case it bumped and broke. I packed these into large plastic tubs with a closable lid.
Then I packed those tubs in my car myself and, on a day separate from the main move, brought stuff over to a corner of the place no one was allowed to go near. That way if anything was broken, it was my fault and not someone else's.
Your big 1/32nd planes might need a trip on your partners lap preferably with a police siren escort and someone riding shotgun with a weapon.
This might not be plausible if the move is a long one

I moved a little over 900 miles using this method. I just suspended the models in a plastic bin. I'd put the wings to over hang a bit outside the bin and maybe put a Styrofoam block under the tail for support. Models were secured using Tamiya tape. Smaller models (1/72) I just taped down and/or together to prevent movement. Tanks I just taped down to the bottom of the tub; very durable.

You will get a bit of damage. I think I had a drop tank fall off and a bit or two of hung ordnance fell off. Pitot tubes/ antenna will probably have to be reattached on some models. But; it's completely doable if you're careful and pay attention to how they're loaded into a car. If the models absolutely have to go with a moving company... good luck, I'd actually take some time to think out a good suspention/protection program.

- pictures for those interested.

Vancouver rental market??? Hahahahahaha. Think Sydney Australia real estate...just as stupidly priced here and very hard to find rentals. If you are an hour or so out of the city maybe, but even then that market is flooded with people selling off and moving out of the city proper.

Ok so this is how you would think you looked with my idea

Then this is how you would really look

and the plane would be dropped in all likely hood

Ok now look again at Tom Cruise's picture and his front wheel. ......that is a freaking tie down strap on it, yes??!!!
The bugger wasn't even riding the bike in that scene...can you believe that. My whole teen years were a lie!!!!ahhhhhhh

I use polystyrene sheet, placed in a cardboard box or one of those plastic storage boxes with the lid locked in place by the handles, and cocktail sticks pushed into the sheet and positioned around the model, holding it in place. If you place the sticks around the model, so that it just touches, it is pretty much unmovable!

Also, depending on the size and depth of the box, it is possible to have more than one layer by adding internal supports (I've used the polystyrene that comes with washing machines and the like, cut to a suitable size and white glued into position) and therefore carry more kits in one box!
...and pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in Space cos there's bugger all, down here on Earth!
