Tamiya 1/35 Opel Blitz

I'm sorry this build thread jumps ahead to pretty much final painting, but the earlier build photos I took seem to have disappeared

Anyway, the kit was a straight forward build with no fit issues whatsoever (typical Tamiya) and I painted the inside of the cabin before sealing it up (Its worth noting that Tamiya supply the window masks which I thought was a nice touch).

I primed the chassis in Ultimate Black and Ultimate Grey for the cab and back.




The main colour is Mr Paint MRP-037 Dark Yellow RAL 7028. This paint is very thin but covers well and is a delight to airbrush.





Decals applied and weathering started.







I've tried to make the wooden planks inside the trailer look non-uniform, but I must admit to being a bit stuck on how best to proceed to make them look worn and distressed (If anyone has any tips I'm listening).





I've also started weathering the underside but theres still plenty to do here, although I wanted to draw attention to a product I've just started using and am very impressed with, Vallejo's Rust Texture from their Environment Effects range. The exhaust pipe shown here is painted with it straight from the bottle, nothing else added. I think it gives a very realistic pitted rust effect and colour.




Tamiya also supply a lot of oil drums, fuel cans and fuel pumps with this kit. So far I've only applied the base coat.

Hi Norm,love the paint and weathering, the under side ,it's a same you painted the wood because you could have used a razor saw blade and dragged it down the wooden planks, that's how I do it sorry it's a bit late now.

If you have a junior hacksaw blade you don't mined wasting, that would work but test first

In an effort to salvage the cargo area, I have covered it in sand to help hide the un-weathered wood (Try to imagine that this lorry has seen heavy use and recently been in a dust storm ).







Another first for me is an attempt to make a Tarp using toilet tissue and PVA glue. I don't know if its going to work, but I'll post final reveal pictures of the lorry and the cargo in my gallery when finished.

Way to use the old noggin on that sand idea, mate. Looks really good. I've been meaning to do some DAK vehicles lately, but I haven't gotten round to it yet. This is some good inspiration

Hi just a little tip you may already know. If you're going to be completely covering the cargo with a tarp you can substitute blocks (wood, plastic, anything) and things instead of expensive aftermarket stowage. Either substitute the whole lot or if some is to be seen, say at the front, use cheap stuff at the back to 'bulk' it up.

Private Pete messaged me saying exactly that and I will be taking your advice, after all, it's a pity to waste those fuel drums when I can use them on something else.

I want to finish this up soon, but can anyone help with regards to Tarp colour used on DAK vehicles?
