What is a Group Build (GB)?

A group build is where everyone on the forum (who wants to participate) gets together and picks a mutual subject to model. It will usually run over an agreed span of time (every 4 months for ISM). Everyone who's entered posts up their progress (in pictures) as they build the model with a final reveal and showcase at the end. There are usually a specific set of loose rules to say if it's got to be OOB (Out Of the Box) or you can add extras such as PE (Photo-Etch), after market resin parts or decals etc. There's never a rush and we will allow enough time to participate in the GB and do all your usual modelling at the same time.

There will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes for every GB.

Because at ISM our ethos is that it doesn't matter what you build or how it turns out, as long as you enjoyed the journey, the way who gets the prizes is determined is going to be totally different to every other modelling website! It's not going to be just the prettiest or best built model that wins or places, the prizes will go to the best overall build thread. This means the more back story to your model you post, the more updates (with pictures) you post, the better the explanation of your techniques to achieve the end result (inc your youtube vids) you post, the better chance you will have of getting placed for a prize. Basically what this means is that the more you share your information, the better the benefit to the modelling community, which in turn benefits everyone of us. So, it doesn't matter if you're all thumbs, just started modelling last week, or can't achieve an exact replica of the subject you're building, we want to see that you've enjoyed the journey to the end result, no matter how it's turned out and most importantly, that you've had FUN getting there.....

Group builds are great fun and gets everyone working together towards the same goal and helps to get modellers out of their usual comfort zone and try something else whilst sharing their tips & techniques with the whole community. If you've never entered one before, don't be shy and have a go, we'd love to see your work....

Great post lee, sums up what a group build should be perfectly and as lee said its not about the perfect model, just showing the forum how you got the end result and enjoying yourself.

I think the only rule we need to add is the usual box and sprue shots of the un-started kit.

Then post as many updates as you can showing various stages of the build, techniques etc as lee said.

If you need guidance please ask.

What about making ISM GB different from all others Websites by opening the door just a tad more? and I mean "just a tad" more to Maximise "our members" Participation!

And by being different! this might drive our membership up? By The same token! For just that!

I have no hidden agenda about this proposal ! Since we want the best participation and
Keep having Fun and by trying to have Fun.... might as well try to include as many peoples as possible!

My Idea is to have those of us with already Started kits but "Stalled" or dead in the water due to all sort of reasons to "be given" a chance at participating in some of ISM GB's!

Sometimes a Stalled kit isn't our fault and they often fall in the cracks and seldom come back on the build Table! ISM unique GB's could be a source of Energy and Moral Support that would prove healthy to many In helping them finish those Dormant kits!

The sponsors can elect to make their prizes only available to those entering unstarted kits, but the shelf queens participant could benefit from our Mutual support And get a finished kit as their prize !
Just for sticking around and finishing their own kit

Once again, I am just trying to add Water to wheel and see where it gets us!

Personally, I think they should be unstarted kits, at a later date we could have a "shelf of doom" GB.

Nice to see members thinking outside the box though.

Was wondering if all group build members should get a medal, similar to a campaign medal to stick in their signature or on their profile pic.

All it would take would be coming up with some medal designs, and then combining them with the IntSm logo to make a signature picture, people would then be given the link to the completed picture to use as their signature.

I can have a fiddle in photoshop and see what I can come up with, I'll try and get some ideas up in a week or so maybe.

Hey guy, as a complete new person coming into this hobby I trying to understand how GB/SIG and all that good stuff everyone goes on about. do you go Google+ hangout where group of YouTuber or modeler just chat about the GB/SIG. I know other community do it and have Q and A session in there as well. could be a good way of sharing more info? Sorry if this has already been muted, like I said I'm new to it all.

Thanks for the explanation guys! I will watch for future GB's and will try to participate. I'm new to modeling do everything is a learning experience!

I do like the "shelf of doom" idea. I think it can help restart some old projects. Participants could learn from others as to how to solve critical construction issues that we all face from time to time.

Hi guys, as some of you know Im still new here by around 2 months and began the Scifi sig a month ago (and having fun with it, but had a silly glue spill..arrrg) but thats not the issue. I had (or thought) I did not have any weather kits in my stash (which is a kinda large) and cant afford to buy stuff new ATM. So didnt really look at anything else other than my current sig.

During that time I found a nice small 1/48 Monogram Hawker hurricane for WW. Sweeeet! BUTTT (and a big but) it is not what Lee says OOB (out of the box) because it came in a single bag at a dollar store. I still have the bag too (with the 99 cents I paid for it 20 years ago) haha!! IS this alright that I came in a bit late (2 months left) and have an OOB-ag kit?!! Never started as well, but a couple parts are loose being in the bag! (what a find tho, for that price) with decals, ins and canopy too. (I dont think this is a shelf of doom either) just a thot? hehe.

Awww great Paul, thanks alot! Yea Ill start it now. What ill do is take a pic of the bag and also mention the box and find a copy of the box for user interest but explain stuff (hmm seems I do that alot these days, so sorry for being so verbose here) No problem... off with the build!
