Mr Hobby Aqueous vs Tamiya Acrylic

Post by TomcatModelKits »

I've been brush painting with Tamiya acrylic for a few months now with decent results. (Check out my Hasegawa F-35 on youtube) But I'm thinking of moving to Mr Hobby's Aqueous line of paints because they're alcohol based just lole Tamiya's, and also because Tamiya doesn't have specific RLM colours (I need RLM 78 and 79 for my ICM Bf 109 F-4 Trop.)

Here are a few questions:
1. Are they thicker or thinner than Tamiya paints?
2. Can they be thinned with X-20A or do you have to use Mr Hobby's Aqueous thinner?
3. Straight out of the pot, do they dry slower of faster than Tamiya Acrylics
4. When thinned 10 drops paint to 10 drops thinner, how long does it take to dry until a second coat can be applied (This is my thinning ratio for Tamiya acrylic)
5. Do they smell?

Thank you for taking your time to answer, whenever I start something new, I try to learn as much as possible so I don't mess up. Happy modelling!

Why not buy a pot of Mr Hobby and try yourself?...then experiment.

Ok this is my opinion of Tamiya v Mr Hobby Aqueous.

1. Much and such the same in thickness
2. Don't know about X20A but Ultimate thinners work well with both paints.
3. Again much and such the same in drying time
4. No clue about drops, I thin my paint in the pot by filling the jar up to just above the bottom of the neck and it airbrushes well enough for me
5. Yes they stink

As I said my opinion only.
