1/35 HobbyBoss ZTD-05 AAAV

Alright... so with my Lowe's wip coming to a close - http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.p ... 7&start=30 ...... I'm gonna build another one. A rather unique subject, this one.

As you may all know from my recent works such as the Type-90, the LeClerc and the Lowe, I have no interest in building mainstream kits ( well, Apart from the tigers I/II ).

I got this when Model Zone Holborn was relocating and was offering everything 50% off and I had to buy this one.

This is how the box-art looks like -


Opened it and I was greeted by a rather large hull and a box full of sprues -






As usual, everything starts from the suspensions -
I had to put on some kind of small little shocker absorber thingys and the arms -





Followed up by the rear hull and the door. I choose to show the propeller openings as closed


I closed the two halves of the entire entire hull after ward -


Next, I started making these hydraulics for the front flaps -


Which goes on like so -




I also started putting on some stuffs on top of the rear hull -

I have a E-100 and this thing is as long and only slightly as wide as the E-100

Right, I have an update here Gents ....

I carried on with some bits and bobs from on the top of of the hull. I put on the Exhaust pipes and one of the engine grille. The etch are from the kit itself -


Knowing how annoying and complicated this workable flap will be, I decided to start building the bigger parts to make life easier. Here is the rear flap -


And this is outer part of the front flap. I had to put on those table like structure onto the flap. Stupid Hobbyboss had punch hole on that flap so I had to fill them. You can even see them in the photo there.


I deviate along from the instruction and started building the turret.
The gun was actually made to be moved up and down -


But after the mantlent and its cover was up, it cannot move anymore. I don't know why they would do it like that .
Here is how the turret look in general -


I put on the hatches. The hatches can be shown open with complete lock and handle from the inside but since I could not find a PLA crew member, I had to close it off.


I put on the smoke grenade launcher after ward -





And I try as best as I can to put on as many parts on the back of the turret as possible -


There are a lot of small pieces involved and it really tire my eyes out, dang. But I am enjoying this build. I don't know how that infamous flap will do to my patience but I hope nothing too serious LOL.

Had to make the masks myself... I will show you step by step.. let me update how I made the flap first ...

Right guys. I got an update for this baby.

Last time, I stopped at the turret. This time, I will be pushing myself to take extra care and make those workable flaps.

Firstly, I put on the the hydraulic cylinders on the upper/front part of the main flap -


and followed that up with more cylinders on the lower/back part of the main flap -


Followed up those teeny tiny little hinges ( I believe they are called hinges ) on the lower/back where the upper/front will join -


more of those teeny tiny parts that will be glued on to the main attachment points on the lower front chassis. I had to put down small strips of plastic to stop those bloody things from popping out from weight and stress.


And these are the hinges on the upper/front which will be let the two flaps join -


Followed up with some kind of arms that will hold the rod on the hydraulic pistons -


The rods goes on with the arms closed off on each ends-


A few number of curses flew by as the plastic that was supposed to be inserted all along the axis of the hinges broke. But I managed to salvaged the situation. WHEW.

After making sure every glue is dry and the attachments are strong, I can now move the flaps -



I had a series of mini heart attack putting these flaps together.

And this is the rear flap with its two main hydraulic rods ( the rear flap was easy to put up )-


I moved on the complete the turret. I had to put on yet more tiny pieces. I honestly have no idea what these are and putting them on was a pain in the back side... oy vey

And then, I put on the turret basket, WHICH comes in one complete piece in a separate sprue, nicely casted and easy to clean up-


And I put on various bibs and bobs throughout the turret and finished everything except the optics -


I also put on the secone PE engine grille and that finished up the hull -


Primed and the first colour laid down for my digital camo to come -


I'm already painted but I haven't uploaded them yet ... so I will update on that after this one

Not really Daishi ... first, that is a 105 gun .. not a howitzer so the recoil is not that strong... 2nd, as far as the pictures I have seen, the flap is down only when in the water...

Not really Daishi ... first, that is a 105 gun .. not a howitzer so the recoil is not that strong... 2nd, as far as the pictures I have seen, the flap is down only when in the water...

Sorry, my mistake, I thought it was a bigger calibre than 105, and the rear flap looked slightly curved to me (MrsModeller is taking me for an eye test next week ).

In that case I would assume that the flaps are designed to increase the surface area in order to reduce relative displacement, a bit like the Sherman DDs. Also, if the rear flap is hydraulically operated and is behind the propeller outputs it may act like an aircraft elevator and would pitch the bow up.

It looks a really nice project, I'm not very interested in modern armour but it looks truthly amazing!

Alright now that the Lowe has finished ( in case you haven't noticed - http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtop ... =46&t=2409 ) ... Time to update on this thing

Last time, I left off with the first colour applied.

I masked that and put on the second colour and then masked it again -





After 2 day of rest and masking, I managed to put on the third colour -


And finally masked the third colour before I can apply the main base -


After taking off all the masking tape , this is what I get -


I painted the wheels like so -


Don't worry about the messy white colour on the hubs. They will be closed off with these little things -


And Voila -


Here is the all around views I took with the wheels attached and one of the track assembled -

By now, you must be curious what happened to the complicated flaps I was working on. I still have them rest assure, I just wanted to apply them last without hinderance -
Here is the back flap glued on. The back flap went on without any problems and is still workable.


Now this is when all hell broke loose. The time I spent trying to be so carful to make the front flap workable was for naught. For reason unknown,the flap is not folding up on top of the hull properly. There was a substantial gap and when when I tried to exert some force trying to fold it down properly, one of the support braces for the hydraulic rod broke off. Curses flew around in the air and had to spend an entire evening trying to fix it. I was already running on empty that day so I took a good night sleep and proceeded further the next morning. The same thing happen. Another morning spent fixing it. By afternoon, when it broke again for the third time ( and many other mishaps as well ), I just lost it. So much so that I was having difficulty breathing and I was seeing red and wanted to just smash the model. So trying to save myself and the model I spent so long on, I just glued everything on.



Without gluing, the top flap was way up in the air. At least, like this, I can keep going on without being angry.

Having glued that on and satisfied with that and finally calmed down, I decided to cool down with some small detail paintings. I painted the driver scopes -


And the Commander's sight -


And painted the inner cup of the lamp with silver and traced the rim of the glass with green -


Another lamp and what appears to be a gunner scope -


After that, I spent a quick evening and night finishing the camo pattern on the side skirts and finally put them on -

Well, that's that. It's almost finished. I'm hanging in there... The worst is over.

That is one of the most ornate camo jobs that I've ever seen applied to a scale model Gary.
My hat is off to you for even trying it, you did a fantastic job on a really hard subject.
It's too bad about the flap, I was hoping to see it installed. But that happened all the time, especially with something that complicated.
You learned while you we're doing it though and that was the most important thing.
I look forward to the finishing touches.

Right guys.. Time for an final update before I launch this -

I painted the on board tools -


And the tow cable -

Per the suggestion of my teacher, I might have to go back again, paint it black and dry brush the steel

And I put sands on wet effects all around the vehicles -








I managed to put on water flowing down the front flap when it was folded back up and I also applied sands on the edges on the assumption that when the vehicle reach the shorelines and just before it fold back the flap, some sands would get stuck on the edges. Maybe I should put more sand on the front flap as well.


Same procedure with the back flaps -

I might put in more sand on there.

Well, this is the last update. I still have to do some small retouch with the sands and maybe add some more smaller water streaks. After that it's finally done. Thank you for being with me all the way. Much appreciated

Awesome work on the camo. There are some pretty cool vehicles out there for the Chinese, but I am scared of trying to do digi camo so I won't be getting any of those anytime soon!

I'd hold off on adding anymore sand if it were me. You have enough on there now to suggest placement.
I would only add more if I were putting it in a diorama.
