Games Workshop Beastman 28mm

Hiya All

was unsure If I would be able to join this GB but remembered I had an unopened box of beastmen by GW in my stash, so one of these Beasties will be my entry.

For this build my aims will to try some new methods:

Free hand warpaint
Realistic Metal effects
Realistic leathers
Fur effects
paint layering
Metal weathering

and above all to have whole load of fun

Of all the vile and murderess creatures that stalk the woodlands and hinterlands of the Empire of man the Beastmen rate as the most fierce and Ancient. When the world of man was still young, a cataclysm of dark magic befall the world. Men and Beast began to mutate into what become know to the tongues of men as the Beastmen. Though many scholars in the Empire believe that Beastmen process the same intelligence as men, their society is very crude and nomadic in nature. Their primitive cultures worship the dark powers of the Chaos gods the same powers that in fact mutated them. Beastmen are scourges of the wild borders of the Empire where they raid isolated towns and farmsteads however it is know for Beastmen to unite in massive warhreds and mount open war against the Empire or even themselves.

Hi All, a quick update for you

Done some work on the head of late , adding highlights to the basecoat of English uniform by adding more and more sunny flesh tone to the mix, after a dark wash was allowed to dry. successive lighter coats were applied until thin layers of sunny flesh tone were applied on any area were direct sun light would fall on the skin.

The armor plate, was based in bronze washed in a dark wash and edge highlighted with silver to simulate light catching the edges of the metal and from friction contact. The eye ports were picked out in copper and in a sepia wash, and the leading edges picked out again with copper. The steel horns on the helmet were weathered with various red browns and oranges applied with a sponge

The horns were the hardest to get right, basecoated in beige washed in sepia and highlighted in beige again, this was repeated several times with lighter mixes of beige with each layer

I also wanted to give his little beard a died effect, by giving it subtle red and orange tones with the fleshtone showing through in places, it may be a little hard to see in the photos but I really like that element to my little dude

I've really got into firefly but I really like BSG

As for the geek googles or my Iron man my visor cause it makes me feel cool I say it wont be long before I switch to them

A quick update to share with you fine chaps

Began work on the body by first picking out the thick fur on the legs and his rather healthy happy trail with Citadel Skrag Brown then hit it with a wash of earthshade and then a strong drybrush of Citadel Tausept Ochre. This was done before any basecoats for the skin were lay down as the drybrush would make a mess. The skin was based with Vallejo British Uniform and the chain mail with gunmetal grey

for the leather loincloth and straps I wanted to try something new, and was equally excited and worried about but wanted to take the leap. For the leather I used Daler - Rowney aquafine artists water colours, (I'm too cheap for oil colours :p ) The basecoat was Brunt Umber and while it was still wet I tried my hand at wet blending Brunt Sienna as a highlight, and this was my end result, might add a little more Sienna to bright it up a tad, but I'm very happy with the end result just have to refine it

Also the flesh has got its wash and awaits its first highlights

Wow that's looking good Shane, I still need to get a subject for this GB.

I like the colour of the leather Shane.
It looks great.
I'd probably drybrush the highspots lightly with a lighter brown or or a tan colour depending on how harsh I wanted the light source to be.
It would also cut down on the shine a bit.
Everything else looks freaking awesome!!!

As well as agreeing the awesomeness of this piece, I second Coen's suggestion, a little tan or similar at the high points and around the side and bottom to increase contrast and indicate wear might be good (try on a test piece or bit of scrap first perhaps)
Looking forward to seeing more of this - GW is a whole new world to me and I like what I see

Hiya,

done a little more work on Mr. Beastie last night, went in with the first highlights by adding a little dark flesh to the British uniform shade from Vallejo, and applied it to the top areas of the skins to begin the highlight process and the gut plate and chain mail got a coat of gunmetal grey

I wanted to make the metal look a little aged and mistreated so I gave the metal a wash of green to "stain" the metal

I also took on your advice about the leather by working some tan into the edges of material to make it look worn, its a little subtle but I think will add a few thin layers to bring it out

thanks mate, its a lot fun painting this chap, and have a few more GW models I could paint up for this if I have the time too, Its nice being able to go where ever you like creatively and not have to worry about the laws of realism

Hi Lads,

its been a while since I last showed any progress on Mr. Beastie but I'm pleased to say he's on the bench again some much needed love as the two parts are painted up. Which are two great big axes now beastie would complete without heaving a bloody great big axe

base colours are down and have been given a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade for the flesh areas and Nuln oil for the steel areas, now just has to be let set for a few hours and highlighted up. We are inthe home run now





so here is where he stand now

been adding highlights to the arms and doing some rust and weathering on the great big axes Mr.beastie is sporting






arms fixed in place, now he is beginning to look the part next is to add some flock to the base and it will be the finished model, very excited
