Auto Filler/putty ?

Reading around and stuff, I read about shrinking putty.

I read on google some people use auto putty like stuff used to fill car panels.

Has anyone used car fillers on kits??

it might be cheap and easy to access... but use it at your own risk ! you need some breathing protection while using this stuff... and it shrinks and cracks as well ...


There are lots and better suited for scale models putty out there you can use...

3M has an auto body filler, Bondo, I use form time to time when the modelling ones let me down
Have to be careful with it as can melt your plastic

I think I'll stick to the glue and putty trick, I managed to fix a complete panel with glue and pieces from another kit, I'm actually quite stoked with that effort.

I sometimes use a product here in the States called Auto Glazing putty, it is a semi-thick paste, about the consistency of toothpaste. It is a lacquer based product, but the smell is minimal. This stuff is not fiberglass based, it can be thinned with a acetone or lacquer thinner and applies nicely with a spatula. It is a red-oxide color and does not appear to shrink much. It can be smoothed and feathered before it dries. It dries fairly quickly and sands wonderfully with wet-sanding and can be polished out to match that of the surrounding plastic.

There is no one filler putty that does everything and they all have their good and bads

Hi oh wow I'll have a look out for this one, I keep making mistakes and end up filling so so much, yesterday I filled the plastic too much then I had to glue the air brake down and then I had to putty around it.

Starting to think i fill everything

I had a peek in the filler drawer and pulled them all out for a photo

Different ones for different uses. Only thing I haven't got is the sprue glue stuff...still have to make that

that's what I thought you were referring to when you posted this with out the pic and when mixed with part b it gives off heat.

I incorrectly called it body filler when in fact it IS glazing and spot putty...two very different things

What sort of mistakes are you making? Take your time, dry fit everything before you start sanding, trimming or gluing. It's like my favourite DIY advice - "Measure twice, cut once".

The last was a very silly mistake, in the euro fighter there's an air brake engine hatch and I fitted it and it didn't want to fit so I sanded a little but it ripped through the plastic and it had a hole.
Only way I could fix it I glued it in place permanently and I filled the holes with some putty and I'm still in the process of sanding it down.

I think I made some silly mistakes, I guess a lot of learning has come from the first model and there's a lot to still learn.

I have a couple of 1:48 kits think I will practice another 1:72 before I embarked into these in case I make a mistake.

Hi everyone, for me and my massive amounts of mistakes I just want to find a better filler than the modelling ones, after reading then shrink and models get like destroyed in years to come.

Being in Australia and our climate it sets quickly but I'm not sure of over all longevity.

No idea why...sometimes I think is freight plus a hefty mark up. Bit like these spray booths we ordered. i think it was MAVERICK that had a quote locally of 1800aud.....quiet ridiculous, but you get the idea.

You probably already know this but Tamiya has a polyester compound in binary form, a body and a hardener. This smells and works exactly like a similar auto body product from a reputable vendor previously mentioned in this thread.

For what it's worth, this type of product often provides a better adhesion for primers than lacquer soluble fillers. This holds doubly true when considering lacquer soluble paint. It cures quicker and is easier to mold to boot, since it doesn't sink into crevasses, nor does it melt plastic.
