1/48 Tamiya Fairey Swordfish Mk. 1 floatplane

Here are some photos from the swordfish build. Just a couple of notes:

I used the Tamiya PE rigging set. It works. But alignment is very important. Tamiya has you precut slots for them. Pay attention to the angle of the rigging and cut the slot at that angle. It makes the process much easier. Other rigging was done with EZ line.

Also, ribbing detail was done with masking tape. I then painted Tamiya Smoke X-19 over the masks. It leaves behind contrast between the ribs. I first used that technique with the WNW Salmson build and it works well.

Other than that though, standard building techniques were used. I used Mr. Color and Tamiya paints.

A little putty work was needed on the fuselage seam. But almost not filling was needed. It fits beautifully.

It's a great kit . I really enjoyed building the MK. II. They are both about the same with a few cosmetic differences. I'll be interested to see how your build goes.

Thank you. I think the Swordfish is one of Tamiya's best kits ever even though it's got it's difficulties. I've really been into biplanes the last couple of years. I think they are my favorite subjects to model especially those coming from WNW. My favorite R/C aircraft I built was a biplane as well. I really love subjects that look like you can climb into them and take off and planes from this era are all like that.

From Friday's live show, Tim was talking about starting a "rigging build" for WWI era aircraft probably late in the year....I would be all in for that as have a few biplanes in the stash, but haven't built any yet.

I would be too especially with the new camel coming out from WNW. We'll see. I really want to build the Harry Tate. But that kit seems to be very hard to find these days at a decent price.
