Italeri Mirage III E 1:48

Post by Nige201980 »

Here is my entry for this group build.

Quite an old kit with raised panel line and no detail in the cockpit but im hoping to sort all that out by rescribeing the panel lines and scratching some of the cockpit details if i can.

The box.

1st main sprue

2nd main sprue
Image

And the bombs and what have you
Image

A few bits that fell of the sprue

The clear parts

The build ill be doing
Image

And taking a leaf out of wappys book some bits and bobs to do the scratch building
Image

I also did a review of this kit

I think this build is going to test me to my limits but im looking forward to it.

Some history from wiki

While the Mirage IIIC was being put into production, Dassault was also considering a multirole/strike variant of the aircraft, which eventually materialized as the Mirage IIIE. The first of three prototypes flew on 1 April 1961.
The Mirage IIIE differed from the IIIC interceptor most obviously in having a 30 cm (11.8 in) forward fuselage extension to increase the size of the avionics bay behind the cockpit. The stretch also helped increase fuel capacity, as the Mirage IIIC had marginal range and improvements were needed. The stretch was small and hard to notice, but the clue is that the bottom edge of the canopy on a Mirage IIIE ends directly above the top lip of the air intake, while on the IIIC it ends visibly back of the lip.[citation needed]
Many Mirage IIIE variants were also fitted with a Marconi continuous-wave Doppler navigation radar radome on the bottom of the fuselage, under the cockpit. However, while no IIICs had this feature, it was not universal on all variants of the IIIE. A similar inconsistent variation in Mirage fighter versions was the presence or absence of an HF antenna that was fitted as a forward extension to the vertical tailplane. On some Mirages, the leading edge of the tailplane was a straight line, while on those with the HF antenna the leading edge had a sloping extension forward. The extension appears to have been generally standard on production Mirage IIIAs and Mirage IIICs, but only appeared in some of the export versions of the Mirage IIIE.
The IIIE featured Thomson-CSF Cyrano II dual mode air / ground radar; a radar warning receiver (RWR) system with the antennas mounted in the vertical tailplane; and an Atar 09C engine, with a petal-style variable exhaust.[citation needed]
The first production Mirage IIIE was delivered to the AdA in January 1964, and a total of 192 were eventually delivered to that service.[citation needed]
Total production of the Mirage IIIE, including exports, was substantially larger than that of the Mirage IIIC, including exports, totaling 523 aircraft. In the mid-1960s one Mirage IIIE was fitted with the improved SNECMA Atar 09K-6 turbojet for trials, and given the confusing designation of Mirage IIIC2.

And some reference photos to whet your appetite.

Cheers guys i hope i can live up to to it.

Right to of rescribeing the flat surface of the wings.

The top of the wing
Image

The tools ill be using.
Image

I'll start with the needle and the pin vice just to get it started.
Image

Next one of my wifes needles again two or 3 passes this just widens the line a bit.
Image

Then a quick sand down
Image

And there we are just needs a wash to get rid of all the dust.
Image

I'll do the rest in a bit as my eyes were getting tired so i will do the next top section have a rest then do the bottom the fuselage will be done when its together i think i'll have another look later and see which is the best way to tackle it.

My next job is the cockpit and seat look at all that detail wow its great NOT. this is going to be fun.
Image

Until the next update.

Pie tins are stiffer than tin foil so easier to use and stay where you bend it.
Done one lower wing mate the rest ill do tomorrow I did put some photos up earlier on how I did them. Would have done them today but my eyes started to get tired and didn't want to mess them up.

Not that much done today but here is what i have done.

top and bottom of both wings re-scribed. I'll do the fuselage when its joined together.
Image

the corregated metal sheets in the exhaust tube.
Image

and trying to add some detail in the cockpit. i put the decal on of the instruments glued a bit of clear plastic sheet on top then cut out some foil from a yes you guessed it another pie tin trying to cut in the right places not that well i might add but for a 1st attempt it will do ill try it again if i need to. Also tried adding some raised detail on the sides with dots of PVA glue and going to build it up so represent some switches and what have you.
Image

the seat has had a coat of primer and painted the cushions so should be able to do more with that in a bit.
