For the past few years I've been using a pair of Xuron 2175ET sprue cutters. They do all I could ask, so I've never been interested in trying anything else. These were a bit pricy, but their performance more than makes up for that. Xuron also makes a vast range of other hand tools, so you can find something that suits your needs and budget.

I have tried a few cutters, but recently found an old pair of lexan scissors left over from my RC days. For me, these perform better than any cutters I have tried.

I use the Xuron cutters too and am very please with them, although for delicate bit you still need to be careful. I read recently that a razor saw can be used for more delicate plastic parts, which I think I will try next time

I have some Revell cutters that are pretty good and I sharpen then periodically with my Dremel and stone attachment. Tamiya make some really nice ones. For small parts I chop them off attached to a bit of sprue first and trim flush after.

I had been using jeweller's cutters or some other supermarket-brand nonsense before I picked up a pair of Tamiya cutters and they're absolutely amazing compared to what I used before.

I use side cutters that a friend recommended to me. They are from Harbor Freight tools. They have red handles and work very, very well. They only cost $3.99 USD.

have you tried one of the specialist cutters ?
I did what you did and bought a vey good set of side cutters sold as a electronics tool and thought they were good. In hindsight I can tell you even though they cut plastic well due to the high bevelled edge on the cutting edge and the way they came together during the cut. I had a higher percentage of broken parts ( the fine ones only ) and many parts just used to fly off into the yonder. These are designed for cutting wire.
They really are chalk and cheese.

I really really like the Gundam Planet cutters I picked up from Amazon. Prior to that I was using Excelite nippers for electronics. Those did work ok, but not nearly as well as the GP nippers.
