Sential Tank

Post by digger303 »

Here is a bit of Aussie history that I didn't know about....we were briefly in the tank business.

It seems a cross between a Sherman and a British crusader tank. A few were made, but only ended up as training machines as they became out classed.
Interesting as the chassis was a single casting and so was the turret.

That looks like Bovington.

We're planning on heading down for our annual mooch around the museum in a couple of weeks time so will try and hunt it down and take a few more pics.

The hull machine gun always cracks me up on the Sentinel. It looks like, well you can see what it looks like.

Another odd thing about the tank is it has 3 engines! 3 Cadillac V8s to be precise making 330 hp all told. Australia had no experience of making tanks so the automotive industry greatly influenced the design of the Sentinel.

BTW this vehicle is in the World of Tanks video game. I would like to see a new kit of the Sentinel and it is not beyond the realms of possibility. So many tank kits have emerged in recent years due to the popularity of World of tanks, mostly from Asian manufacturers such as Amusing Hobby, Hobby Boss and Trumpeter.

They couldn't get the engines they wanted, so improvisations was the go. Have to be impressed with the casting for the hull considering the lack of heavy engineering here at the time. The French made a tank with cast pieces bolted together. The USA made one with a cast transmission housing and a couple made cast turrets. It does look a rugged machine, I wonder what is durability was like ?
Not making any comments on the machine gun.....maybe they could have made it bigger
Certainly looks a bit better as a first effort than this prototype New Zealand ideas machine .. The Schofields Tank

The hull armour of the Sentinel was 65mm at the front (well sloped) and the turret was 65mm all round (also well sloped). It was a decent tank in terms of armour and mobility then and only let down slightly by the 2 Pounder gun which was fast becoming obsolete. A 6 Pounder would fit but none were available. However the Sentinel would have been mainly used to counter Japanese tanks which had very thin armour. I think it would have been a very capable infantry tank along the lines of the British Matilda II.

The think tank didn't think quite far enough ahead and she was obsolete by the time it was ready.

Nice pic's and the rough cast texture is shown beautifully....I'm ignoring everything else ;) :cheers2:

If you take a longer look the seam line on the road wheels can be seen. I used to sand those off with vigour.... :ooops: , but not anymore. :th:

Yep I think there's a lot of us that have fallen into that trap - it's amazing how even well-worn tyres still show that seam.
