RVHP 1/72 Be-12 "Mail"

Post by Scruffy »

The Be-12 is a gull wined, turboprop powered amphibious flying boat which first flew in 1960, and entereed service in the early '60's. Its primary mission was sub-hunting, but also evolved into SAR duties and a firebomber. The Be-12 is a unique looking aircraft and should be a very cool model.

The RVHP kit has been out for a while now, in at last two boxings, the ASW varient and the firebomber version. I do not know if it is still avaliable or not, as I got it when it first came out, and from a fairly recent review it appears the kit was re-engineered at some point as the author mentions the outer wing panels being seperate pieces, where in the kit I have the wings are eah a seperate piece. It is an all resin kit, and quite large and heavy. Overall, it is well cast and has a decent amout of detail, but is conspiciously lacking any detail in the nose section, which is one area that I will need to correct, otherwise I hope this will be a pretty straight foreward build, as I have a couple of other soviet aircraft to build (I am one reference book awa from adding a 1/48 Yak-25).

The contents of the kit,

And the underwhelming instructions.....yep, that is about all you get in the way of instructions!

There is auctually more information on the paint schemes that the actual construction of the kit....should be fun!

Oh My... a resin kit. :eeek:
I've built three of those a while ago now... They can be a joy or complete grief. :shifty:
Lots of filler and sanding is usually the plan.
I've got a resin ship in my stash I've been avoiding hahah.
I wish you much fun with this Scruffy.
It will either be a bucket of fun... or a bucket of something else.
Either way it will be a challenge. :th: :th: :th:

Thank you guys, hopefully this should go well. Nothing too bad bad that I can see; just down and dirty modeling, the front engine nacelles, wings, tail, etc are all butt joints and will need to be drilled and pinned for strength, the crew stations will need some additional detail, but after that it shoulden't be horrible.

As for a challenge, this would be a good one!

I wonder if the person who wins it auctually builds it?? :ooops:

WOW, think I would rather scratch build it and save myself £509 with £1 being spent on tissues to absorb my sweat while I cut and stick the plasticard
