Sdkfz250's Adeptus Astartes Mark III Space Marines

Post by Sdkfz250 »

Decided to put this up as well for me to get through as a smaller, quicker project before work starts on the Ork Bomber. Not only that, but since these guys are going to be part of the Renegade Space Marine army I am planning, it means I can kill two birds with one stone and perhaps provide some useful hints and tips along the way for those of you who might also find yourself with a box of Space Marines to build.

My plan is to start work on these tomorrow (Tuesday 8th) with the intention of completing them all before the week is over. That might be a goal I regret setting for myself as I still have no clue what colours I will paint/spray them and I purchased this box a week ago.

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I'm stuck on the Ostfront...and so are f**king you!

Look at all those parts! I've been thinking about some of these, but I'm not sure I can manage the painting of 100 left arms, ya know? Maybe some brownies and the right music can help with the concentration...

Right, first update on my progress on these Space Marines. Fair warning I will be putting these together in small stages so I can explain the methods behind my madness and hopefully provide some tips and/or advice along the way.

First thing's first, I cut out, sanded and glued together all the legs into pairs as indicated on the first part of the instructions, thankfully due to the way they're joined to the sprue you can get the flat edge of the clippers very close to the parts themselves so there's minimal sanding required as a result. When it comes to gluing them together, the leg itself has a raised lug at the join with the waist connection having a socket for a specific lug to fit in at the correct angle for posing. Gluing these is very easy thanks to the guidance of the instructions and the 'plug and socket' method, so these were put together quickly and once dried glued onto a base. My advice is to glue them down so the waist of the model is as central as you can get it on the base as you'll see below.

Image

From there, I clipped out both halves of the Space Marine's bodies, again they are joined to the sprue nicely so you can snip them off very close to the individual parts. With only a mild amount of sanding to where the arm joins are located (the position they're connected from) I glued both halves of the bodies together. There's no specific order given here as all the front and back body halves are identical. Once they were dried I then began gluing them to the already assembled legs. Here's where you need to consider what you're going to 'give' each of the Space Marines in regards to there equipment, as you have to factor that in when posing the bodies.

Image

I kept most of them in a fairly neutral position with only minor posing, except for my squad's Sergeant who you can see in the foreground with his arms glued on. The arms are separate to the weapons in this case, so that you can pick and choose which weapon you use on his arms, I personally opted for the bolt pistol and chainsword as you can see above.

Due to how the Sergeant's arms are posed, these are the only arms I would advise gluing on before painting, the posing for the rest of the Marines has them hold their weapons across the front of their chests, so I'd suggest you leave them off until after painting in order to make the painting process easier, but I'll go over that in more detail in a later post. For now, thanks for dropping bye and auf wiedersehen, pet.
