Make your suggestions for GB’s and SIG’s for 2018

Post by Mylightweight »

Edit by Lee....

Make your suggestions on this thread for all the GBs and SiGs you'd like to see in 2018. We'll then put them up for a poll at the beginning of November.....

Now's your chance to have a say :th:

How do we make a suggestion for GB’s and SUG’s for 2018?

I’m thinking of suggesting a 1/48 medium and heavy bomber SIG (Lancaster, B-17, B-29, B-25 etc) NOT including fighter bombers (Mossie, Beaufighter etc)
On the bench;
Tamiya Dragon Wagon & Jagdpanther
RFM Bergepanzer Tiger 1
Eduard Spitfire mk IXc
Bomber SIG
Image

In the stash;
Too much to list, let alone build

They usually have a poll towards the end of the year and we vote on what we want.

However, I will make a plug for a failed SiG we tried to get together earlier this year.

Before there is the actual poll, there is normally sort of a nomination or suggestion thread, where everyone/anyone throws out there ideas. Others will offer interest in ideas suggested (i.e. "I'd join that one"), then Paul and Lee decide which ones seem to have the best early support, but also cover the widest range of topics to allow the greatest number to join, then it goes to the poll.

It was suggested a month or two ago, and I had been toying with the idea myself: a black and white GB. Only black, white and the full range of grey would be used to make the model look like a 3D version of a B&W photo. Any subject (armour, vehicles, figures, ships, planes) and any era (but preferably something from the B&W era (pre-1950s?)).

A 1/48 heavy bomber is a fairly big model, by opening it to all scales the size won't force some people away. Who knows, maybe someone with a garage they don't use would enter a 1/32 heavy bomber. :)

I'm in for the heavy bomber & night fighter builds:) Restricting the scale does put some folk off, as has already been pointed out.

How about combining the Bomber & Night Fighter ideas into a single GB/SiG since the night fighter was often the nemesis of the bomber? Might give more scope and attract more people into the single build.

A couple of ideas following on from this years subjects:

After this year's "Winter is Coming" how about "It ain't half hot mum" for Desert or Jungle theatres?

And following on from "FAA all the way" how about "Top Gun" for US Navy aviators?

Finally how about a build with "No Engines Allowed" - I was originally thinking of towed vehicles like field guns etc, but it'd also give latitude for the figure/bust painters, dragons, gliders and sailing ships... basically anything without onboard power.

Edit to add since next year is the 100 years anniversary of the end of the first world war it might be appropriate to have a build for any subject from that period.
Cheers, Neil

Another idea I had was to build something you have physically been in or driven. It could be fun to see what stuff we could come up with. For example I could build a USS Kidd as I have visited that ship in Baton Rouge, LA. or a Fairchild PT-19 as I got to take a ride in one of those. Ironically, I couldn't build a 747. Apologies for the absence of alliteration.

Hey ya gotta spice it up somehow :D
I like your idea of something you have been on...have a model of a Grumman Goose flying boat I got to ride shotgun in. Scariest thing in my life!!!

The WWI idea is sound as well

+1 for this idea, me likes it, different and could be possibly fun

Now if I could just find a leopard 1 A4 and the A/M parts to bring it to Australian spec.....

There should definitely be a WW1 build in 2018. I would also like a WW2 armour build, but I'm not sure how to make it special.

I would love an Eastern Front WW2 build, that would be a perfect excuse to build some more Finnish tanks. Maybe even a Leningrad Front build to make it even more specific.

I've been aching to build a Tamiya Me-262. This might tip me over unless I buy and build one before the year's over.

I'm also liking Korean War, Inter-War and Northern Lites proposals by shortCummins. The Kitbash got me thinking of a kitbash I would love to do too.

Definitely like the North Africa campaign & Recon ideas, maybe expand the MiG theme to all Soviet/Russian aircraft to widen it up a little (Red Star Wings?)

Have been mulling over the possibility of an insect theme but not sure there's enough scope. I came up with Mosquito, Hornet, Gnat, Locust & Wasp/Wespe, Beetle... any others out there?

Also a build for any vehicle that runs on wheels (no tracks) so Cars, Trucks, Armoured cars, Bikes?

a black and white GB. Only black, white and the full range of grey would be used to make the model look like a 3D version of a B&W photo. Any subject (armour, vehicles, figures, ships, planes) and any era (but preferably something from the B&W era (pre-1950s?)).
I think I said elsewhere I'd be in for that, but I'll say it here, too. I'd be in for that. It's a cool enough idea it's on my dance card for 2018 anyway.

The "whatever you've been in/owned" is interesting. I was in the B-17F when the Seattle Museum of Flight was restoring it so I could do that, or if a bomber GB happens.

I've never done a helicopter, so I could back a whirlybird GB.

My own three cents:

Silver Screen: Any kit that depicts something featured in a film. Maverick's Tomcat? Check. Tank from Fury? Check. Quint's boat from Jaws, check. etc.

Trainers/demonstrators: pretty self explanatory. Military stuff, but with some bright colors for a change.

Being that I have had a childhood (and life time) with rockets with flying ones and many in my stash (and even tho we just had a space theme) One Idea I have is a V2 like sig or GB. I know (and have) seen many different variations of the V2 with this rocket made by Revell, Takom, Dragon and so on. This was the rocket that von Braun made in the 1940's in where many countries copied its design to get to the rockets of the world we have today. Its shape is fantastic.

We could call it "Vengeance is Mine" by its original Germans 1st name, i.e. the vengeance weapon..
"Agregate 4!" (before the V2 was used) or even "Spud Vengeance ", being that ethanol made about 140,000 tons of potatoes making fuel for it.
Any other name is quite welcome and a diorama for this could have endless possibilities too.

I think Barbara Rush would agree with me on this one!
Image

This could include the V1 as well I think? Hmm just a thought.

Has anyone mentioned that next year it's also the 100th anniversary of the formation of the world's oldest independent air force?

Happy Birthday to the RAF. Probably worthy of a SIG - any item of kit in the air or on the ground used by the RAF in 100 years of service.

That's a damned good point - 100 years of Brace-by-Wire to Fly-by-Wire (can't take credit - that was the title of the 75th anniversary book)
Cheers, Neil

A 100 year anniversary does seem to be of utmost importance for any aircraft model maker. (or any aircraft aficionados!)

Marvellously Motivating Motorcycles.
Almost forgot the the catchy title
Sounds good. I have some military bikes and the whole build wouldn't take long. :th:

Pre- production prototype build that never made it to full production.
Inter war period

These would be all interesting to my mind.

Yup 1/72 works for me - got plenty of that lurking in the stash even if I can't see all the parts anymore!

Also thinking how about a vignette build - anything with two or more subjects.

1/72 armour any period would be a good one for me :th:

The Odds are Never In Your Favor! - Build a late war model of a losing side in any war. Cold War, WW, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, etc.

To The Victors Go The Spoils! Similar to the previous one except for the winners and can be middle to late war.

Agreed, definitely gonna propose the same one I wanted last year, "Out of Africa" or similar. Basically anything from or being used in Africa, modern or historical. PzIIIs and Crusaders in the desert, Takom's new South African Rhino, the variety of bush planes flying around, all the Soviet vehicles that practically everyone in Africa uses, busts of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. There's so much to cover that's often pretty overlooked and very interesting.

I'm also down for a WWI GB, particularly focussed around the end and just after, say 1916-1920 to give some scope for some of the interesting happenings just after.

And the 100th anniversary of the RAF seems too important to miss.

And a couple of new ideas:

Close air support or light attack aircraft of any era. Basically any aircraft intended for or used in roles intended to provide ground attack support the troops on or near the front lines. You get your standard IL-2s, Stukas, P-47s, Skyraiders, A-10s, some helicopters etc. but also oddballs like the A-37 Dragonfly.

Anything that's been damaged or destroyed, perhaps in or out of combat, civvie or military. If it's been shot up, shot at or shot down it counts whether it be a tank showing battle scars and still rolling, an aircraft riddled with bullets or missing parts, a shipwreck or an old hulk rusting in the desert for decades.
