East vs West

Post by UKscalemodeller »

Most people will know that the Warsaw pact ( and so communist) countries generally went for a quantity approach to warfare.

However, looking down the list, NATO is outnumbering the WP by roughly 2:1 so far

I guess that possibly has something to do with the fact that the majority of people on the forum are from "the West".

Or that there are fewer people on here who are fans of Soviet style armour and planes? I know I am not so interested in them from a modelling perspective.

This may also be influenced by the fact that the WP produced a lot of absolute dross during the cold war period... no one can ever say that the early BMP's BTR's T55 or pretty much the entire Soviet fleet could be considered to be design masterpieces :)

WP subject matter doesn't really interest me for some reason but I am a Yank that enjoys British military aviation so go figure.

But Matt, that is because British aviation from the 50's, 60's and 70's was bloody awesome! I mean we were the only nation to really conquer VSTOL aircraft. I am aware the Russians had one, but it was never as successful as the Harrier. I mean, the very idea of making a plane capable of vertical take off and landing could only have come from a bearded man in a shed with a pipe and a cup of tea! lol.

And we learned our lesson in WW2 with regards to tank design, and produced some of the best tanks in the world as a result, the Centurion was awesome, and once the initial power issues etc with the Chieftain were ironed out, it was good too, as were Challenger 1 and Challenger 2. Chally 2 is still regarded as one of the best tanks in the world to date.

All this boils down to the fact that Britain is awesome :thumb1: :thumb1: :thumb1:

Can't disagree with that!

As a 'Westerner' the reason WP stuff interests me is the fact that they were the enemy, you didn't get to see much of them when I were a lad.

Strangely also I have no real interest in the pacific theatre during WW2 either.

I think its because we don't learn much about that side of WW2 if its ever studied in school. We did WW2 in primary school I remember, but it focused on what life in Britain was like at the time. So the evacuations, the Blitz of London etc, rationing, the black market etc. Rather than learning about the actual fighting that went on.

The Pacific for the British was a complete shambles, maybe its why we don't learn much about it, as basically we were completely taken by surprise in Singapore and Malaya etc by the Japanese, and that was the end of that!

I've got a Trumpeter T62 on the way that I'll be building for this. That's one more at least.

Yes there's that and the fact that I got to live in Great Britain in the early 70s while growing up in the U.S. Air force. I cut my modeling teeth on Airfix and Matchbox kits and played with Dinky toys so I consider myself an honorary Brit.

Cool thread. Is it possible that there are just more NATO models on the market? I'm not too sure how much WP vehicles have made it into styrene form. Maybe I'll just buil;d something from the Warsaw Pact, as I have yet to get something for the GB. I highly doubt it will tip the balance

If I have the time I might do the same Russ.
There's a few good kits out there to choose from in all the genres.
I haven't decided yet what it will be though.

My problem is that I have a lot more ideas bouncing around in my head than my free time and wallet allow. Been looking around in my library and the Net for inspiration. I was originally thinking of doing a M47 Patton in west German markings. I'm just not motivated about building it. :wall:

After some reading, I am tinkering with a Hungarian Revolt '56 theme. Russian armor is quite a mixed bag at this time. Got everything from T-34/85 to T-55s.

The pondering continues . . . :scratch::

I share your pain Russ, I've gone a bit looney with the spending this summer and I'm waiting for the wallet to lick it's wounds a bit.
I also have too many projects both inside and outside the shop on the go.
I'm thinking about and armour piece as well, and also something Soviet. I just don't know what yet.
I'll have to do a bit more research, modern armour isn't really my comfort zone. :eeek:
Maybe a T62, I'm not sure.

Interesting comments on here, I was not that interested in WP machinery but now getting into them in a bigger way. I'm just finding things produced when everything wasn't designed on computers more interesting and WP items tend to be more agricultural then those produced in the west.

I find the doctrines strange though. I think there is a case that German ingenuity and equipment were better in a lot if cases then those operated by the allies and we we lucky that we were up against a corporeal and his cronies who were in overall control with little strategic idea of what to do and the equipment needed which were overran by more numerous but not necessarily better equipment (Sherman anyone). A doctrine carried on by the WP where as the west went more to the German philosophy.

I will try and join in on this one and to be balanced do one kit from each side. I've been threatening to get by B36 made sometime and this seems to fit into this theme. Have to think about the WP item although getting into them I don't have that much in the stash but most Likely be a 1:48 Mig 21.

Cool this thread is stimulating some WP interest. Not to create competition, just more balance to the model Force :nena:

I can agree with Coen. Modern armor is hard to get into. Not my cup of tea, I guess. Maybe when I'm a lot older I can have more appreciation for the genre.
