AK Primer

Post by GMahaffey »

Any experience with AK Interactive acrylic primers? Do you need to thin them for airbrushing? How long for them to cure to add on the actual paints?

I've used their Olive Drab one, it's OK. It goes on thick so try to put down thin layers, as you should anyway, as it doesn't seem to have self levelling properties. I don't think you 'have' to thin it but I added a few drops of AKs own thinner as it looked so thick, and it didn't seem to hurt it none, and it shot well through a 0.3 needle.
Also shake it a lot, I mean A LOT..
I decided to leave mine 24 hours to cure but looking at the bottle it said that anyway.
Would I use it again yes as it's better than most on the market (that I've either used or have heard/read a lot about), would I choose it over Ultimate primer no.

Works ok. But there is no reason to pick this over Badger/Ultimate primer if you want a waterbased acrylic/urethane primer.

I need to echo the above, if you have access to Badger/Ultimate primer it's the way to go. You can grab it through Amazon, HobbyworldUSA (US distributor for Ultimate), and Ultimate itself. I've ordered from both and despite the greater distance the Ultimate stuff from the UK gets to me in about the same amount of time as it does from Hobbyworld, so it's win-win no matter who you order from.

It cleans up nicely (acrylic) and can be shot "neat" -- in other words no thinning required!*

If you're limited to what's on the shelf at your local hobby store (LHS) then I'd say maybe look into Tamiya primers. The bottles need mixing 50/50 with their lacquer thinner. Their rattle cans, though imprecise, are really quite good in a pinch, too.

But since I tried the Badger/Ultimate stuff I haven't looked back.

* Sometimes the white might need a drop or two of thinner if it has been left alone for a while, but that's been rare in my experience.

I've used it it was okay. Looking forward to using badger primer (being from the US, it is much cheaper here than purchasing Ultimate primers). I found that I had to thin it a bit and I just didn't like the gray color, it's color is similar to plastic to be honest.

gray picks out the imperfections quiet well and badger and Ultimate are the same product. :th: :cheers2:
