Car models - deep gloss/shine

Post by sectoid1 »

Hi,

I’ve been wondering what people use to get this deep gloss/shine on their model cars? What do you do? Do you sand your model between applying layers of primer/paint and then polish and wax or do you use some kind of gloss lacquer? If so, what kind?

I’ve just started assembling my first car, a 1:24 Shelby Ford Mustang GT350, and I was wondering if someone could give we some tip :th:

Thanks

I have learned a ton from watching videos on "The Scalemodeling Channel"!

Check out his list of How To videos. There are several that might help you out.

Here is one specifically about polishing.

What kind of gloss effect would you get using 'mr color GX100'? Is it worth trying?

Been seeing good things about the Mr Hobby GX100, like to get my hands on some
I am ordering the Gravity Clear and its polishing system soon, test ordered some paint first
Hard to get the Zero stuff into Canada so hoping the Gravity supplier in the States comes through...looks promising.
Paul B has done some awesome car bodies of late with the Zero two part clears....some without polishing I believe he said
You need to be really careful spraying all these as they are very harmful

Gx100 works well as a gloss coat but because you have to thin heavily with levelling thinner it will melt your decals if your not careful, but with careful use you can get a very good shine as you can also with x22 tamiya. The real problem is you will probably need to use some elbow grease with compounds and wet and dry to get the best shine you can.

2k is very easy to get a good shine, but it is very toxic to use so you need a good spray booth and respirator.

Thanks for that info Paul, nothing like destroying a build right at the very end stage with a decal destroyer!!

Thanks, didn’t know that...keep it in the back of my noggin if need in future
I went the Gravity route after watching guys on UTube discussing how “hot” the paint was
They were having problems with orange peel, surface roughness and the plastic getting eaten
They are automotive paints so need some care and attention

Ive been using MrPaints 2k clear lately. Tried it on the following paints:
Faskolor - Worked!
Tamiya TS - Worked!
Tamiya X - Worked!
Vallejo Model Air - Worked! (did not expect this.... thought it would eat the paint but it didnt.)

Want to use Zero Paints but i cant get it in sweden so i have to order it abroad if i want it.
I just prime, lightly sand with 4000 grit, since i normaly use metallics i cant sand those coats cause it will ruin the metallic. if i get any tiny imperfections i just clear over it and wet sand the clear coat.
Heres the result on my last build. It isnt wet sanded or even polished on the picture, just a picture taken after the clear dried. https://gyazo.com/66835a513f4bd24fa18fe95dae9c1ebe

Thanks
