I was wondering how it would look with the windscreen on it.
Freaking awesome is how it would look.
I don't know why I even wonder. haha
It still blows my mind that there is no kit here... nothing... just snippings and clippings, bits and bobs, and the odd bit of garbage.
Just epic in it's creation Andy!
When this is done I'll just curl up under my bench and cry.
It'll be like a buddy moving to the next town.

Well as I stated earlier in the week, my build is complete, my build log isn't so I best get posting eh??
I will start by painting up the solar panel and the roof and roof instrument panel.
Image

Image
I have used a cheap £1 chrome spray for the panel and roof, the inside roof lining will be brush painted using the paint decanted from the non functioning Ford spray can I used for the rest of the interior.

Cheap gloss white gives a not so glossy finish to the solar panel.
Image

All "Chromed" up... :th:
Image

Time to go colour crazy with the roof mounted instrument panel using the artists acrylics and a cocktail stick to paint..... :D
Image

Image

So......... shall we paint this up and see what it looks like Chrome???
This will either kill it or make it.... Remember me telling you all how rubbish I was with painting??
Fingers crossed...Breath slowly and Remember to allow drying time..... my biggest pitfall... :wall:
Here we go then......

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Hmmm..... I still see some bad bits but to mess with it now will destroy it I think, so live with the bad bits and learn for the next time eh??

Image

Image

Image

Going to remove the masking on the clear pop bottle windows to assess the overspray/glue damage...

Image

Image

Not as bad as I thought they would look..
Maybe a little white spirit soaked cotton bud and some clean buds to dry up with will bring the plastic up a little better and remove tape residue and overspray marks ... :shifty:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Well you can see in.... :th:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Lots of pictures sorry.......
Just trying to show you guys the finish from recycled pop/ flavoured water bottle windows. and while I am taking pictures I am not fussing, ruining the shiny, soft, easily fingerprinted and greased up paintwork....... :wall:

So before I go for another day I will just post up the inside roof lining with the instrument panel in place and all brush painted up. Its not great but its the inside roof so isn't easily seen unless the roof is off for inside viewing which I am leaving this option along with the opening sliding doors.. :thumb1:
Image

Image

Image

Now next post will be a little change from the numerous car pictures.... I have got to decide what I am doing with this huge chunk of chrome painted plastic as its easily marked and fingerprinted.
After sitting with the kids watching Disney Junior, then a stint on Hamilkar Barkas' You tube channel it hit me..... :bash:
More next time, which will be real soon as we are getting close to end date... :eeek:
Take care all, as always thanks for dropping by for a look, and don't miss the next couple of posts as I wrap this crazy scratch build up.....  :th:

Mr Coen sir thanks again for your continued support, I will listen more carefully to your videos from now on, usually I have a look as I am bitting and bobbing in the background, as my internet connection and YouTube aren't the best of friends and I find that my video time is very intermittent, with constant stop, start viewing.
I won't let you down though sir, I am going to push myself for the next part of this build and attempt a new build skill...

Warning..Lots of waffle and pictures and a video in this post....
Well I am back again, only just over a week to go so need to get this log finished off and as I mentioned last time this post may be a little different to the usual. :wtf:
.....but hopefully still entertaining and educational at the same time because today I am going to try something totally new and hopefully pull it off else my "popular" build may end up not so..... :shifty:

Anyway I will stop worrying and get to it.. :thumb1:
A post or so ago I mentioned Disney Jnr television channel and Mr Hamilkar Barkas' Youtube videos..
Often while looking after the kids while the wife is at work we end up with the Disney channels on and one of the new re-vamped programs from when I was younger is Art Attack, once Neil Buchannan's baby, recently upgraded and brought up to date with young fresh Disney presenters doing their thing.
More on this later as I am about to use a technique shown often and encouraged for arts and craftsy kids bored at home...
Anyways Mr Hamilkar often fetches dirt from his yard and creates fantastic, detailed dioramas for his figures and armour.
My Solar car has no figures and isn't a dirty, rusty killing machine but "needs" something more to finish it off.
Something I have never done before...........Until now.... :eeek:

I think I need a base that is "more" than just a piece of card with a logo on it....though I will still include this I need to construct a scene, or vignette to enhance, add interest, and also bring to life nothing more than a shiny piece of junk plastic.:

I searched for ideas and looked into options and found the perfect scene.. :D
During the 74 minute long PILOT episode, after escaping Francis 7. Logan and Jessica park up and ..... I will just show you it may be easier....
After escaping the domed city the pair spend the night in the observatory in New Washington where they discover the solar car and have to escape from Francis. While there they discover a map showing a Fallout shelter to the south east.
Image

They after fleeing decide to head here to seek out survivors thinking it may be Sanctuary....
They stumble upon a rusty signpost showing the way but end up..... well you'll have to re watch the episode but theres my idea.....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Now I will try to show you what I mean in a video...
I captured and converted a 45 second clip showing this moment when they stop and find the signpost, then leave the Solar car to go to the Shelter door seeking survivors....
Image

You may want to right click the image and open link in a new window or new tab as clicking to watch will redirect your ISM page meaning a refresh, retry when returning as I don't know how to link the Photo bucket mp4 file..

But after watching the clip you should see what I am gonna try to simulate, only simplify at the same time.
Remember I mentioned the cardboard and logo picture thing?Well....
I have "doctored" the 1976 Logan's run annual cover...( I have it as a collection of jpg pages )..
Image

Right so I mentioned Hamilkar, Art Attack and a vignette.....
Lets go..
Art attack just love telling my kids how to make landscapes from rolled and taped in place newspaper and using "art attack paste!" 50/50 mix of PVA and water and torn up pieces of paper OR tissue build the landscape....
In my other hobby I paint landscapes and as I use watercolour my oil painting pre-stretched canvas boards don't get used..... they do now... :th: along with some Styrofoam packaging to give a base to build on....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Ready to begin landscaping on...
Image

Taped in place..
Image

Image

Image

....And cover in the glue mix and add torn paper to cover and strengthen...
Image

Image

Image

Right I continue with total scratch base building and using some moulding trim from B&Q add a frame around the base to tidy it up....
Image

Image

Image

Hmmm, still doesn't look like the scene on the pics and video clip yet.... Lets make a signpost... :thumb1:
Image

Does it look right?
Image

Image

Image

Just needs some weathering and some writing on it... :thumb2:
Remember that Logo I shown earlier? I am going to make a backdrop for the vignette which means more frame making....
I ain't NO carpenter...
Image

Image

I am using a broken LCD screen back piece and the plastic magnifying screen covering to hold and cover the image..
Image

Image

Adding some tree/bushes to the base to mark there positions as the thing dries..
Image

Image

Weathering the signpost...
Image

Salted...
Image

Image

Still positioning and gluing bits on before I "Hamilkar" this base.... :thumb1:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Signpost paint and weather ready to glue in place...
Image

Image

These are some of the Lilac pieces I harvested from the bush outside and Lacquered to retain there shape, tho their colour may change they wont drop the buds off..
Image

Image

And the twigs used from the hedgerow outside...
Image

Stain it up before taping up and getting messy....
Image

Image

Image

....and before I wrap up for another day, a quick print off for the signpost to complete it before the messy bit....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Next time the messy bit....
Sorry its been so long, hope I didn't lose you all on the way here...
Thanks for sticking with it, I did say this post was a longgggggggg one...
And as always, cheers for taking a look, hope you enjoyed the different post today..
More soon...

All of your posts are long Andy... just like all my vids are long.
It just takes guys like us... a long.... time..... to say..... anything.
Like Ents.

I didn't expect a diorama dude.
Holy cow, you're using almost every discipline that's available in scale modelling.
Next you'll be scratching figures out of potatoes.
This is again, phenomenal work.
I can't wait till the next update.

Thanks guys, you put big smiles on my face with your comments and praises, and I haven't even muddied and grassed it up yet!!
I have that to do plus decals and some bits to glue up on the car, share some drawings and measurements, including a logo for the decals and then hopefully final reveal.... :eeek:
Maybe Monday for the diorama finish, Wednesday for the car and drawings then final reveal Thursday/Friday as I think the SiG build ends Saturday... :violin:

Thanks again and I noticed last night Photobucket went down so the video was dead, but it works now..... apart from on my tablet which even though it is an mp4, refuses to see it, recognise it and play it, so sorry to anyone who cant watch it.
Seems to work fine from my base unit and laptop/netbook though.. :thumb1:

WOW... times flying by guys...
So I am back again to show you this FIRST ever proper diorama base for the Solar car and for those who didn't watch the small video clip from the last post, I am creating a scene where after escaping in the car from pursuing Sandmen Logan stops and investigates a Fallout shelter in the vicinity of Greater Washington.
Okay where was we??
A before the mud and grassing picture..
Image

...and I best show you all what I received in the post last week as well?
Image

Rough meadow and Lichen scenic, nice and cheap at a couple of pounds each, and in the lower corner is my own long grass substitute, some off cuts from a hanging planter liner.
Image
You know the matted grass type... :D
Image

Now Hamilkars' mixture of garden soil, white glue, water and something to mix it in.. ( thanks Mr Barkas )
Image

Shall we start? Oh look who put that logo there?? :eeek:
Image

Now due to being a "work fast before in dries" type of application and me being eager and forgetting to photograph the muddy bits and sprinkling on and gluing of grass and lichen we suddenly end up with this....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now I take it outside and knock off any loose, scatter the old tealeaves for dry stuff ( Thanks for the idea Dan )...
After this I use the wife's Firm hold hairspray again and cover it to "Fix" everything.. Even having "happy accidents" on the dirt track by overkill hairspray leaving dry whitish marks...:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Hmmmm, hope you like it so far??
I will show the completed base in the Final reveal shots just to keep you all keen.... :th: :thumb1:

So that's it for tonight.
Next post will see the finish up of decals and extra bits on the car along with those drawn plans and logo pictures.. :thumb2:
Till next post, as always thanks for dropping by and having a look.
Stay safe and Happy modelling guys.

Wow... Thanks for the kind comments and praises guys....
I really didn't think it was that good, but having never attempted such a build I didn't really have anything to compare it too....
Thanks again, I will look after it and try to build better using it as the basis to improve upon..... :th:
More updates soon...
:cheers2:

Thanks Lee, glad you like it mate... :th:
Right shall we wrap this up so I can post some final reveals up over the next couple of days??
I'll be sad to see it all end.... .......But I have another little build on the go now so wont be long till I'm posting again... :thumb1:
Right where was we? Diorama base? Check.... Car built? Check..... finishing touches? Nope...... lets go then..
So Decal/stickers...... handmade and rough as but.... they're mine...
Image

Image

Best get sticking them on then?
Blurred picture but there she is before .....
Image

Cut out the tiny ones and placed them on the Nabi screen so not to lose them..

Little sticker time....

Got some spares cut out just in case... :thumb2:

Another job I haven't finished is the gluing of the Solar panel to the roof piece so a quick dip with CA glue and its on and in place, just needed clamping for a while to keep it down as the roof piece had started to curve for some reason??
Image

Image

Image

Last piece for the car is the inflatable hovercraft type edge that inflates when the car rises off the ground..
Eagle eyed followers will have spotted the strip cut ready in front of the car on the last few pictures...

What I haven't ever mentioned is my last job was a flat roof fitter working under licence for Firestone fitting EPDM fireproof rubber roofs. Mostly dormer and extension flat roofs but the product was a rubber sheet with a 20 year guarantee.... :wtf:
Guess who kept small off cuts for patching leaks and Solar car skirt building ?? :eeek:
Take a small piece and a sharp knife, cutting a 7mm strip off..

Hot glue time..

Its blurry but here she is all finished.....

Hmmm, so maybe you'll have to wait for the final reveal for some clearer shots?  :eeek:

As promised here are some detailed drawings sporting the measurements and angles of all those awkward bits

WOW..... bet those drove you insane?
They are all in a folder on my build Photo bucket account about 43 of them, all different close ups of certain bits on the a4 pages... :wtf: :eeek:
Hope you all still here because I think we have finally come to the end of this scratch build journey.
A first for ISM I believe, but hopefully not the last.
I can see loads of errors and build bits that could and should and will be better on the next build, but for now we'll call it done.. :shhh:
My aim has been to entertain, inform and encourage the ISM community, showing you all what.... ( if skilled, as I am not!! ) ...can be achieved with some imagination, risk taking and a bit of household junk.. :eeek:

I think I pulled it off, Thank you Nige for being inspired to have a go, and produce some EXCELLENT jet engine and cockpit detail using pie tins and cake packaging.
Various others have regularly dropped by with a comment encouraging me to keep at it.
Coen, DC87, Paul, Lee, Guppy and Nige to name a few..:
I will post up some finished pictures soon but until then I just want to once again thank you for all the kind comments.. :thumb2:
Heres to the next build...... :cheers2:

Happy modelling guys.. :thumb1:

Andy, what an absolutely fantastic build, it is gob-smackingly good - in fact my gob has never been so smacked!!: : : :

Apologies for not posting any comments earlier, as I have followed this thread from the start. On holiday a couple of weeks ago, I even paid the hotels extortionate internet fees, just so I could keep up with your build, and may I say it was worth every penny. Sir, you are an inspiration and I will never again moan about trying to fit small parts or photo etch after seeing what you have done with everyday household items - absolute genius.

I must confess to not wanting to see this end, but at the same time can't wait to see the final reveal. But hang on, didn't you mention you had something else on to go.............

Thanks Alex.... So so glad you enjoyed my build mate. :th:
I at first didn't think anyone would be interested in some guy using scrap plastic and household junk to model with.....
So glad I took the plunge and joined in with the SiG now.
Yeah its a little rough in places, a little more care and prep work wouldn't have gone amiss but I was keen, and excited about the finished build. I attempted my first diorama base and am happy with the finish.
Yes I have got a first plastic kit on the go.... An old tool revell 1/72 scale aircraft.
Very poor detail, raised panel lines, no cockpit detail etc... and small for 1/72 with a crazy camo so I will be posting that soon.... and yes there's scratch building... :th: :thumb1:
Thanks again for your following and praises, sorry about the hotel WiFi charges.... :D
Happy modelling...

No apologies needed, as I said it was worth every single penny and there was NO way I could have gone 2 weeks without an update! :eeek:

Can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeve.
