Stubborn Airbrush.

Post by Steveo535 »

Hi All

As the title says I have a stubborn iwata revolution tr1 airbrush. I came to give it a deep clean and lube over the weekend but I could not disassemble it.

The tip came apart no bother and could remove the needle but I am unable to undo the the rear of the airbrush so I can remove the middle of the brush to check and lube the bushes. I am also unable to remove the air intake where you connect the air line to the gun. (Hope this makes sense).

I have never undo the rear of the airbrush or the intake so they are as they left the factory and just wondered if you guys have any tips on opening up a stubborn airbrush?

Been waiting for those more in the know to chime in here, but hate to leave you hanging
I usually post suggestions like this and then either get no response or the poster already knows it all..but here is my $.02

Have a search online for your airbrush model and get an 'exploded view". Print it out
Look up videos on you tube as well for your model and cleaning it
Those will show what should come apart, how and most importantly what goes back together again

Sometimes a soak in thinner is needed to loosen hardened on paint...it can accumulate in the threads.DOnt use WD-40 or oil for god's sake or you will be spraying fish eyes in your paint for years.
I would expect having to replace an O-ring or two if you haven't been loosening, cleaning and lubing things up.
O-rings get crusty and brittle..just ask NASA
Your air line is either a quick disconnect or a screw on. Make sure there is no pressure in the tank or line when you undo it

If not, try one of these......Trojan Hammers, clawed for your protection

Your tr1 comes apart just like this one, the only difference being that you have a trigger rather than a plunger button.
If you've never undone it it may be a bit stiff and especially if paint has dribbled and spilled and set on the threads or join but it will come apart like this.

Thanks for the replies.

I have the blow up picture of the airbrush so I know it should come apart but I just can’t shift it.

Will give it a soak in thinners before I try the hammer

I have just had to remind myself on my TR0. So to strip down:-

Remove the back end cover and remove the needle and the chuck nut.
Remove the trigger by removing the screw/hing pin at the top.
Remove the air valve at the bottom.
Just behind the air stem on the bottom you should see a small grub screw. Remove this.
You will probably need a spanner to remove the rear section. Once this has been removed if you look inside the AB body you will see a large piece with a slot in it. If you remove that you can then slide all the internal trigger mechanism out. This will give you access to the triple seal housing again a screw driver will allow you to remove this.
When you put it all back together just be aware that the 'large piece with the slot in it' also has a hole in it. This is where the grub screw goes in so just make sure you align it correctly and fit the grub screw.
Continue with the reassembly.

Re-reading your post there should be no reason for the airbrush not to come apart. I put masking tape across the jaws of my pliers when I initially took it apart so as not to cause any damage. I only needed them for the air valve. A spanner for the back (It was only just over finger tight and did not need much to loosen it) and screw drivers and it was all fine. My air valve is only screwed in finger tight now and I haven't had any problem with leaks.

Hope this helps.

I would go for a good soak in cleaner, the fact the back end won't unscrew indicates the possibility to me that paint has got past the needle seal/s.

If you do get it apart and you should, it's all about force is applied in the end check the seals.

I just hope the amount of force required in sufficient to damage it :ooops:
