A place for old decals?

Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1/48 Ju-52 with the intention of building it into a version used for the 1936 Olympics (there is a boxing of this, but that's not the one I bought, but it has subsequently come back up on eBay )

I have found a set of decals that cover this, but unfortunately they no longer seem to be in production. I have tried eBay etc, but the only place I can find it is the manufacturers website, where it cost $45, which is a bit steep I think! Not sure if its because they are out of production as other decals for 1/48 didn't seem as expensive when I quickly checked

Anyway, does anyone know any online shops that may have random old decal sheets that don't normally come up on Google?

I did some digging, and came up dry. What about contacting Revell to see if they can get a replacement decal sheet for their 04558 model?

Yea checked out here in the US ebay as well for it sheppsea and found a close one, but not for the 1936 Olympics from Techmod and most have worldwide shipping too.

Thanks both, the Peddinghaus one is one I found as well, Revell will be my next port of call, failing that I’ll just create my own masks

I checked all of the decal sheets in the loose decal bin at my local Hobby Town. No joy. Sorry mate!

I have the rough draft of the masks made up. I wanted to test them out first. Here are my results. It was very rushed. Start to finish was probably less than 15 minutes of actual work. I would suggest taking a bit more time on the real thing.

Firstly, I since I am not in Germany and not restricted, I just masked the swastika as one piece.

Here is the mask. Hard to see as the cut marks are very thin, but that is a good thing!



These are my steps, your mileage may vary.

1. Prime the surface. I used a spare fuselage as a test mule. Badger gray primer.


2. Paint the white background over the entire area (tail for your model). I used Vallejo Insignia white. I couldn't recall what your plane would be.


3. Use a piece of tape to transfer the mask from the carrier paper. Make sure to transfer all of the mask to the tape. Don't leave anything behind on the carrier. Even though this is low-tack vinyl I still de-tacked on the back of my hand before placing.


4. Use the entire mask (all parts) to get in the right position. Ignore mine being crooked.


5. Use more tape to mask around the design. For your tail it might only be on the bottom as the top parts might go all the way up to the top. I put my tape right up to the edge of the mask. This will define the red area.


6. Remove the outer mask leaving just the circle part and swastika in place. Spray the red color.


7. Very carefully remove the swastika portion while keeping the circle in place. Add additional tape to make sure you don't cover any of the red you sprayed earlier.


8. Forget to take a picture of the sprayed black.

9. Wait approximately 4.5 seconds to remove all masking and pray you didn't just screw up by only waiting 4.5 seconds.


It isn't perfect, but not terrible. Part of that may be my rush to get it done. My daughter has an orchestra concert tonight, so I don't have as much time. I used a small heat gun in between coats of paint to help dry. I don't think 1 minute is really the recommended time to wait between colors.

I modified the design of the rings a little from the aftermarket decal sheet. I cut out all intersections so that no colors overlap. It should make spraying a little easier since you won't have to spray yellow over black. The font doesn't match perfectly, but it is pretty darn close. I will get you a proof before I mail out the finals.

Know they are helping you if they can. They did get me some decals for my F-16B and that in 1:48.
