New member intro'......

Hi there one and all...

OK, as per a number of other members I found this site as a result of seeing ISM 'Live at the bench' on YouTube at the end of last year.
And as with many members, I am returning to the hobby after very many years where 'life' simply got in the way.
The last time I built scale models was in my teens, and now in my 60th year with retirement a month or so away, a few viewings of the Friday Live shows has shown me a path back into a hobby with which I can fill my retired hours/days.

With the seed for a return to model making firmly planted, I set about buying up some model kits of interest to me.
Models of interest indeed, but maybe not ideal for someone with limited, and most likely obsolete model building skills to start on.
The one thing that I quickly learned from ISM LATB, is how much kits, processes, materials etc. have moved on and improved over the past 40 years.
In addition to the few kits now in my stash, all I had bought was some plastic cement, a couple of brushes and a modellers knife. Oh dear, I have a lot to learn!

So, in the past week or so I have purchased a set of 'modern' modelling must haves. Various adhesives, paints, tools, and an airbrush with compressor.
Ironically, and interestingly, one of last Friday's questions was answered with, 'better to buy up as many tools, consumables etc. as possible, and not simply stock up on kits'.
This summed up perfectly my position, and my aim now is to learn how to use all of the modern aides to kit building on kits that fit in with my skill set, before bumbling around with, and ruining the kits that are on my wish list.

My intention over the next couple of weeks is to look through the 'how to' guides on ISM, practice using the air brush, and purchase and build a simple, base level kit on which I can try out all of the new methods available. (Any suggestions welcomed).

I never thought I'd be learning something new at my age. But oh man, am I looking forward to the adventure....

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll find loads of help, advice and inspiration on here.

I think buying an airbrush was the best thing I've done, it really makes a massive difference to the paint job compared with brushes.

Welcome Bob! Very good idea to buy tools, its no surprise that having the right equipment does actually make things a bit easier. I don't know where your interests lie but if you fancy doing WWII planes Paul has an old but very useful step by step guide on building the Arifix Bf-109 on the ISM youtube channel. Although he has moved on from some of the techniques it is still very useful to see the steps in making a "proper" grown up model. Its what led me here...

to the forum Bob and an awesome hobby. Man, I could have used this story that you wrote when I joined last April, and it was almost the same, short of location. I think I have learned so much from really all these people that make videos here on this ISM forum alone. As you saw, checking out the modelers on the Live show alone has helped me become a better peep of styrene.

Welcome aboard Bob yes do have a look at the ism YouTube channel you will find a plethora of information on there as well as watching the live show on Friday's also when you are watching the live show if you are in the live chat and click on the people that watch the show/participate in the chat they all have channels with useful information on (well except for mine lol) but glad you've found your way here
