Tamiya 1/24 SLR McLaren Hamann Volcano Build

Post by ZMSCMdlWrks »

Alright so most of you probably want to see this a little more in depth. So here I'll take you through step by step on how this has all gone together. Now for simplicity sake I suggest checking out my youtube channel for the more in depth breakdown of the extras because there is a hell of a lot.

Ok so a quick look at the resin bits from the Hobby Design set.

Front splitter and forward fender flares.

Ok so with all resin kits some, if not alot, of modifications and/ or tweaking may be required to get everything to fit correctly. Such is the case when we start at the nose with the front bumper and resin splitter. The lower 'chin' of the kit bumper must be sawn off. This is ok as there is a factory line thats easy to follow and act as a guide for your saw. Shown below is the removed stock section and the resin bumper fittied after numerous tweaks.

Remember how I said that there is hassles with aftermarket resin kits? Such is the case here on the rook scoop that did not want to settle and glue down.

Image

After that fiasco it fit nicely but not without some damage to the piece itself. This can be corrected further down the road with filler/ putty but here it is installed.

Whilst the roof scoop was curing in it's final resting place I moved along to the engine compartment. Here photo-etch detail from both the Aber and Hobby Design sets were added to give the bay some flare.

As with most of my builds, kit offerings are never really enough so I went ahead and scratchbuilt more detail into the engine to breathe some more life into it.

Whilst all the detail on the engine was setting, I decided to tackle the roof scoop and settle the damage incurred from removal off of the pour block. After several passes of filler, sand, filler, sand etc. we end up with this.

Along with the roof scoop, the engine bay got primer as well.

Next well start putting paint to plastic.

An now the paint. What follows are the finished, unglossed and undecaled body. The body was cleaned and primed with Badger's Stynylrez in a 50/50 mix of white and grey. The pimer was sprayed at 25 PSI through a .8mm needle. the main yellow color is a two-stage paint from Zero-Paints ZP-1396 Renault RS16 Formula 1 2016 Pearl Yellow. This was sprayed at 10PSI through a .5mm needle. The grey areas that you can see are Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey which will be the undercoat for the carbon fiber decals from Hobby Design HD04-0126. So here is the state that the lovely yellow Volcano is in now.
