Nige's ICM Polikarpov I-16 type 24 1/32

Well this could go down as the latest ever finish on a buddy build but I will persevere. I started this way back at the start of December but due to Flickr problems hadn't got around to posting anything. Now thanks to Graeme and his technological wizardry I can post from my phone again! Fingers crossed.

Here is the model I'm doing, everything has been said about it already, great kit etc. Picked it up as a bargain at Telford.

Well of course I started with the cockpit. This seems to have become my favorite part of any aircraft build for me. I like adding all the weathering etc. so at this slightly larger scale to what I'm used to, I usually build 1/48, I thought i would go to town a bit. So the below was primed in Ultimate black then a mix of Tamiya and Mr hobby aqueous colours where used. An oil pin wash made of black and burnt umber was used to dirty it up a bit after a bit of dry brushing. Finally I laid down some earth pigments.

I was pretty happy with this. I had put off the control panel as it was a strange sandwich of flat panel, decal and then a clear piece on top of it all. So after a bit of thinking as I hadn't had one like this before I put the decal on the backing piece glued the clear piece on then used masking fluid to cover each of the dials. Once done sprayed with Ultimate black and dry brushed, done. Again quite happy.

Next was closing the fuselage halves, remembering to add the rudder when I did this! Fit was very good but my lack of basic modelling skills meant I had a tiny step to sand. Dry fitting the wings looked like there was potential for a gap to appear in the wing roots unless I was not careful with clamping.

Unfortunately it also looks like all my hard work on the cockpit is likely to vanish forever....

Glued the wings on and clamped carefully also added the gun thingy sections.

Looked like only a tiny bit of filler would be needed for the wing roots. Time to add the top of the fuselage and the tail wings.

Excuse the dirty nail. You can see the gap in the top section of the fuselage. Filler time....

Also the cockpit becomes almost totally invisible.

I will get up to date on this eventually. So next was the saga of filling the gap on the front top bit of fuselage. I tried using just plastic putty but as many have said it just kept shrinking back into the crack. I thought about using my sprue goo but wanted to continue work on it within the week and my goo takes days to set...

Might be a bit thick. So final choice was a few dabs of ca glue with a hairy stick.

And it did but I forgot to take a photo. Doh!

I then moved onto the engine. Lots of seams on the exhausts to sand and they all needed to be drilled out as well!

Primed again in Ultimate black and then dry brushed with Tamiya aluminium, chrome and gun metal if I remember correctly. Also used Tamiya weathering sets as something different to rust up the exhausts a bit.

Final update which brings this thread bang upto date. That means I will have to get back to the bench and do some more!

So my favoured painting technique at the moment or the one I am trying to get better at is black basing also thought that this would be effective on this aircraft as it's quite plane in places.

Started with the underside marble coat and then thin blend coat to bring it all together.

It's a bit much at the moment but I think once it's had a couple of clear coats for washes etc it will look OK.

Moves onto the upper side and first used the colour call out which was back green?

This was before the blend coat, way too dark looked more like a grey and didn't like it at all. So tried Tamiya nato green...

Much happier especially after a bit more post fading and adding the engine covers.

So there we are up to date. Got the undercarriage to add and a couple of bits and that's the build done. Decals and more weathering to follow. Now back to bench!

So during the Friday live show I got the decals down on this. Made a bit of a mess on a couple. The large side ones folded a bit on the edges as I was putting down. They are very stark at the moment but wrstgeting should hopefully blend them in some what.
