Revell '58 Corvette Roadster

Take 2 on the corvette. The first one died an ugly death while getting stripped. Oddly enough this one got stripped too, but I learned from my stupidity and used a less harmful solvent!

Here she is getting ready for her paint. I used zero's light gray primer. Main and accent colors are in the shot as well.




There is a huge defect in the hood. I tried sanding it out, but all I managed to do was gouge another defect.




The paint is much more "flakey" in person. I am hoping the 2K diamond clear will help bring out the "pearlness" of the paint.
Protip: You can make up any word you want if "quotify" it!

My next step is where I screwed up both this model and its predecessor. There is a chrome accent piece that surrounds the scoop area. I tried using a molotow chrome pen, but failed miserably. I am going to use some advice from demarcation and tape off and paint.

First will be a gloss black base, then a metallic chrome. Once that is dry I will mask off the trim and paint the rest white. Sounds easy, right?

Oh cool a 58 vette! Sorry your having issues with that model. I have not used bare-metal foil yet on any car so far, but it seems it would be cool for these old classics. Found a cool site for it too, if paint gets tuff to do. (not sure myself either with any approach really). There is a neat book for it too

Worked on the scoop area yesterday. It isn't perfect, but it didn't end up with the body sitting in a vat of IPA. That is a win!

I had intended to tape up the front quarter panel after the chrome and paint the leading part of the scoop white. However, I like the chrome with the white, so I kept it. I have a few decals to place and then I will ruin it; I mean clear it.

A few updates...

I stripped the chrome parts. Some of them got overly deformed with extra chrome. Again I am struggling with a yellow hard shell under the chrome. I suppose it is some sort of binding agent that Revell uses. Other kits that I have stripped havent had this problem. I had to scrape that stuff off. I chose Alcad's Black Chrome for the replacement finish. A couple of other parts were finished in airframe aluminum. All parts primed in Ultimate Gloss Black.

Usually Revell chrome comes off with a stern look, unless you want it off.

Did a little more work on the engine and chassis. I decided to just paint things whatever color popped into my head. When you do that, you get things like a copper colored suspension parts. Oh well. The engine was supposed to be orange. However, the orange I had was a little too "day-glo" so I muted it with some dark brown panel wash. I wasn't really wanting to weather it since it was supposed to be a show car, but again; oh well!

First off I want to thank the Live show guys for their kind words when discussing my model.

I didn't get a chance to do much this weekend except work. So not much of an update.

I did some more work on the front suspension and steering.


I also painted up the wheels. I am not sure if I like them or not. I haven't found anything that I like better in the aftermarket, so until I do these will have to suffice.

Started work on the interior pieces. Ignore the fact that some are upside down.

I kinda like the way the paint didn't cover very well. To me it looks kinda like birdseye maple. What do you guys think? The center portion of the seat is still taped up. It is red underneath. This section will interlock with the body. I also two-toned the seats with a darker brown, but then sprayed back over because I didn't like the look.

A little more progress on the interior. I brushed on some aqua gloss for the wooden details. Didn't turn out very well. I will probably add some more and then try buffing it out a bit. Gauge decals are done with a touch of Krystal Klear to simulate glass.

I could really (really) use some help here. I have stripped the doors for the second time. My issue is needing the wood-like parts to be glossy, but the rest matte. Brushing on the Aqua Gloss didn't work (see above). The next thing I tried was using Microscale's liquid mask. That stuff lifted off both the paint and primer when removed.

The doors have some sharp turns and textures that make using tape problematic. I would love to hear how some of you would paint up these doors. My next try will be the following:

Prime
Spray Light Brown (Khaki) all over
Brush on Dark Brown (Mahogany) where needed
Spray Aqua Gloss everywhere
Brush on Light Brown (Khaki) where needed over the Aqua Gloss
Keep fingers crossed

I know it isn't the best practice to paint over gloss without scuffing, but I don't think I could easily scuff around all the other work.

Ok, this is the last time I paint the doors. I have a little accent work to finish, but they are going to be done.

Fairly disappointing in the fit of the body to the frame. I will try and see if I can coerce it to fit. Engine bay is pretty much finished as well as the majority of the interior.

Added the grill and bumper elements last night. They were de-chromed with bleach. After the chrome was gone the evil substance Revell uses as a binder was scraped off by hand. I would love to hear of a better method. I was thinking perhaps an ultrasonic bath might shake the binder loose since it is quite brittle. The interior of the headlights were re-chromed with a Molotow Chrome Pen. All of the parts were primed in Ultimate Gloss Black and sprayed with Alclad II Black Chrome. I used Aqua Gloss as the clear for those parts.

To me the Gloss Black and Alclad II Black Chrome, gives it a shiny but aged look (IMHO). The grill really pops out you.

Looks like I have hit the end of the road for the Corvette. At least for a while. I am waiting on a replacement wheel part (never in the box). Since this was Revell of Germany it will be a looong wait. I will just store it in the tupperware container and pick up the next project. Wonder what that will be...
