Fujimi Porsche 911 RSR - 1:24

I am building this for an office mate. I asked what his 3 favorite cars were and the 911 was one of them. I looked at a bunch of kits and decided on this one from Fujimi. It has a race-car interior, meaning it is stripped down to almost nothing and has a roll-cage.

I primed the body in Ultimate Gloss Black.




The paint is Petronas Silver from Zero-Paints.




Cleared with Zero-Paints Diamond 2K




I must say that I had some trouble with both the paint and the clear. Both operator error. There are some dust specks and a few defects in the painting.

The clear coat is poor even to my mediocre standards. My first mistake was using the wrong airbrush. I have two. A Paasche Talon with a #2 needle (0.38mm). The other is an HS Infinity CR+ with a 0.15 needle. Now I "knew" I shouldn't really use such a small needle with the clear coat. But for some unknown reason I chose to do so anyway. It worked fine for the first two light coats, but I couldn't get a good wet coat. I further amplified the problem by trying to put a 4th coat on. Here I neglected to add additional thinners to the mix. The end result was quite poor. The surface was incredibly orange-pealed and not shiny at all. I let it dry for a day and came back with the proper airbrush. I mixed up a batch of clear and added a little extra thinners. I figured I wanted it to be pretty hot to make sure I got a good hold of the previous layer. That went down fairly well. The surface smoothed out quite a lot. With the second coat I did get a nice shine. There is still a considerable orange-peal, but it will suit my purposes.

Good choice, they are a nice kit, much better than the Revell. I am partial to the slant nose, but that is just me

Not much done last night. I did the under-carriage and some of the front suspension parts. I primed with Ultimate Gloss Black and painted a base coat of Vallejo Metals - Dark Aluminum (or Dark Aluminum for you Brits) I know they are spelled the same it is all in the pronunciation. I must say I really do like the Vallejo Metal Color line.



The hand painting was done mostly with Vallejo Model Air, which surprisingly doesn't brush paint all that bad. The exception was the yellow bits on the front shocks. In my experience yellow is not the easiest color to brush. So I used a Citadel base color for that. I don't recall the exact name, but I am sure it was something like "vile puss yellow". Not really, but they really do have some odd names.

Not that long. I am little concerned of them drying out. This was the first time I opened up the yellow one. One of the others I had used seems a bit dry. I don't care for the containers. I am sure I can thin it out, I just need to do some research on the thinner to use.

That is what he is driving at, the little plastic containers allow the paint to dry out and the lid is easily left slightly open if you are not careful.
I have had mine a couple years now and every once in a while have added dH2O and stirred like crazy...this might be a good reminder to do that again

I thought I had heard they tend to dry over time, but not the info on the containers.

If you haven't used Citadels "dry" line, it is certainly worth giving them a go. I usually end up using some Necron Compound (silvery gray color) on every build at some point or another. It makes dry brushing dead-simple; or really-dead-simple, or dead-simpler. I am not sure which to emphasize. Point being it gives an excellent result regardless of how daft your brush wielding skills may be. Same goofy containers though.

So most of us are here to become better modellers. The best way to become a better modeller is experience. The best way to gain is experience is screwing up. Here is one of those screw-ups. I thought that I would give my roll-cage a bit of character. I gave it too much. Here is the damage.




The look I was hoping to achieve was one of welding stains. I figured it would work the same way I did the heat staining on my F-14 cans. I made two major blunders.

The first was not paying any attention to the mix of thinners vs paint. I was using Tamiya's line of clear paint (Blue, Red, and Orange). I thinned it with straight 99% IPA. The first mix of blue was not thin enough and gummed up the needle enough to not want to spray (or move). No problem, we are learning, and learning is good. Add a little more IPA. Suck the entire pot out with a syringe and squirt it back in a few times to mix it up. Not too bad.

The second blunder was more of a difficulty than a mistake. The surface area I was shooting was very small in comparison to the jet engine cans. All of the different angles made it more challenging to get a thin blue line. I also did the colors in reverse. I really should have laid down the lightest color first and worked into the blue. Since I wasn't sure how I would gauge that I went the other direction. Still learning and I guess learning is good.

Moving on to the next color I made sure that I put more IPA. You guessed it, too thin. Learning is becoming a major PITA. I tried to wipe it up as best I could and keep going. The orange mix was better, but still a touch too thin. At this point my heat bands were waaay out of scale. Time to drop out of school and give up. Into the alcohol bath they go. Lesson learned. I am glad I tried it. Not all experiments work and at least I gained experience- right?

Hit another snag with the Porsche. Still fighting with the roll cage. There are minimal locating pins in the kit and the roll cage is no different. When I glued it together I didn't get the angle quite right. The final shape isn't exactly rectangular, and I have to bend the forward bars a bit to fit. Fit is somewhat of a relative term, as I am not positive that I have the bars in the right spot. The "tub" isn't different from the road car version and has no marks for the roll cage. I may have to scratch build a little. I am not sure right now.

I got the roll-cage beaten into submission.





I mentioned in another thread that I lost half of the poly-caps. I thought I had a suitable replacement. I found a piece of wire insulation that is so close to the right size it is silly. Close, as they say, only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. So, I am off to find something else. Other than that I am certainly in the home stretch on this one. Should be finished up this weekend, barring life getting in the way.
