I have heard people say the dihedral of the wings is incorrect and that the angle should be greater than that represented in the kit I may attempt a fix for this, but will do some research first.
This aircraft served with 100 Sqdn based at Elsham Wolds and took part in one of the last air raid operations on Germany being the lead formation aircraft on the raid to Hitlers lair of Berchestgarten , it survived the war and was signed off from the RAF in October of 1945.

Docs Bomber of the day!

A 1930s Soviet Heavy Bomber K-7

The Soviet Heavy Bomber K-7 Built in Russia during the 1930s. It flew 11 times before crashing and killing 15 people. The designer, Konstantin Kalinin, wanted to build two more aircraft, but the project was scrapped. Later Stalin had Kalinin executed. Evidently it was not good to fail on an expensive project under Stalin. It has propellers on the back of the wings, too. You can count 12 engines facing front.

A few versions of it were made. The size would be equivalent to the Empire State Building on its side, with cannon. And you think the 747 was big... not only a bunch of engines but check out the cannons on the one version above. In the 1930s the Russian army was obsessed with the idea of creating huge bombers. At that time they were designed to have as many propellers as possible to help carry the huge flying fortresses into the air.

Ok it did exist

But the real thing may have been just a wee bit smaller and without the naval gun turret! Fantastic images though. Great stuff!

Yea, I never saw anything like that as well Stokesy. Just looked up Heavy Bombers for today and bang! saw that at this address. http://www.fillmoregazette.com/military ... avy-bomber

Another part in that article said that they were very secretive about it. Dont know but it does look very cool, quite a bit too amazing!
Maybe tomorrow, Ill stick close to the classics we all love.

Yep. Could almost hear Scott thinking about when to schedule the build!

And those turrets look suspiciously like the main guns off an Iowa class battleship. I wonder if the US Navy know they’re missing A and B turrets from one of their ironclads.

Yanno, the more I look at that the more it seems too freaking weird! Was photography that good in 1930?
And theres a guy standing inside the main window .. he almost looks like C3PO?
I use Irfanview to zoom in close and man this looks odd!

So right Scott... a giant coocoo clock for sure, even with the one without cannons up at the top!

Loving Doc's bomber of the day - here's one from me

The YB40 - Flying Fortress - escort concept

From Wikipedia

Work on the prototype, Project V-139, began in September 1942 by converting the second production B-17F-1-BO (serial number 41-24341) built. Conversion work was done by Lockheed's Vega company.

The aircraft differed from the standard B-17 in that a second manned dorsal turret was installed in the former radio compartment, just behind the bomb bay and forward of the ventral ball turret's location. The single .50-caliber light-barrel (12.7 mm) Browning machine gun at each waist station was replaced by two of them mounted side-by-side as a twin-mount emplacement, with a mount for each pair of these being very much like the tail gun setup in general appearance. The bombardier's equipment was also replaced with two .50-caliber light-barrel Browning AN/M2 machine guns in a remotely operated Bendix designed "chin"-location turret, directly beneath the bombardier's location in the extreme nose.

The existing "cheek" machine guns (on the sides of the forward fuselage at the bombardier station), initially removed from the configuration, were restored in England to provide a total of 16 guns, and the bomb bay was converted to an ammunition magazine. Additional armor plating was installed to protect crew positions.

The aircraft's gross weight was some 4,000 lb (1,800 kg) greater than a fully armed B-17. An indication of the burden this placed on the YB-40 is that while the B-17F on which it was based was rated to climb to 20,000 feet in 25 minutes, the YB-40 was rated at 48 minutes. Part of the decreased performance was due to the weight increase, and part was due to the greater aerodynamic drag of the gun stations.

Actual combat results - YB40 aircraft participated in 14 combat missions in 1943 in the ETO.

48 sorties were credited. Five German fighter kills and two probables (likely kills) were claimed, and one YB-40 was lost, shot down on 22 June. Tactics were revised on the final five missions by placing a pair of YB-40s in the lead element of the strike to protect the mission commander.

The original design concept of the YB-40 never played out as intended in practice. Luftwaffe fighter chief Adolf Galland considered the gunship's handful of combat victories to be "insignificant" and not worth the cost of the aircraft. The increased weight from the additional machine guns and ammunition nearly cut the YB-40's climb rate in half from that of a B-17F, and in level flight it had difficulty keeping up with standard Flying Fortresses, especially after they had dropped their bombs. Despite the overall failure of the project as an operational aircraft, it led directly to the Bendix chin turret's fitment on the last 86 Douglas-built B-17F-75-DL production block aircraft, and were part of the standardized modifications conspicuous on the final production variant of the B-17, the B-17G:

Chin turret (first introduced on the last 86 Douglas-built "final production" blocks of the B-17F-DL aircraft)
Offset waist gun positions
Improved tail gunner station with much larger windows, usually nicknamed the "Cheyenne", after the Cheyenne modification center.

One thing I find interesting about this is despite the USAAF's dogmatic pursuit of deep penetration unescorted daylight bombing in 1943, as early as 1942 they were aware of the need for additional bomber protection in the form of some sort of 'escort'. The solution, when it came along, couldn't have been further from the YB40 concept, the P51 Mustang.

Here's one from the archives today - apologies for the iffy quality as this is a scan from a print; I'll have a ferret around and see if I've still got that print buried in an album somewhere and try and get a better scan with new/improved technology!

These two ladies of the air are B-17 "Sally-B" and B-24 "Diamond Lil" when Lil visited the UK back in 1992 - it's the only time I've seen a B-24 in the air.

Sally-B is based over here and I've seen here a few times recently so have some better shots of her for later.

Today I've dug out the mighty Handley Page Victor V-Bomber.

This one is actually a K2 tanker based at Elvington near York and is maintained in taxy and high-speed running condition.

Interesting how Handley Page was very much the bridesmaid and not the bride with its 2 big bomber jobs. First the Halifax versus the Lanc then the Victor versus the Vulcan, losing out to Avro in both cases. All 4 were great aircraft but history has consigned them to forever be the ‘lesser’ sisters at the ball.

I love these Victors, they're the best looking V bomber in my opinion and they out perform the more talked about Vulcan, so I'm told by those who know more than me about this sort of thing.

Thanks guys - glad you like it! This one definitely had an attitude about it.

Just going back to Stokesy's point about H-P always being the bridesmaid, it goes back even further because they were lined up to do the first Transatlantic flight and then Alcock and Brown used a Vickers Vimy instead; which as luck would have it is appropriate in here as it was also a bomber

sorry, but i must protest! i think the Sterling is a beauty!!
now i may be swayed by a few factors, it was probably the first model kit i ever saw in my life, old airfix black styrene job, but i loved it, especially as my dad had built it!
also seen one or two close up, and love the size of the front fuselage/cockpit area. and just finished reading (for the second time), Boldness Be My Friend, a book about a fellow Yorkshireman that flew in Stirlings during the war, and his many escape attempts throughout Europe after being shot down over Germany.
its one kit that id love to go under the ''new tool'' treatment by someone.
