#13 Mark's Revell 1/48 Rockwell B-1B Lancer

Hi guys
So this is my first entry in this sig
The kit will be Revell's massive B-1B in 1/48 scale wich messures about 90 cm long and 86 cm wide or 36 inches long and 34.5 inches wide (roughly) for the golks on the other side of the North Sea
So quite big by any standard
This is the kit that i really wanted to get for this build as it is one of the very few bombers i build before
I had this kit once before but that one fell down a closet and it didn't survive it's close encounter with the floor
So my choise is only based on nostalgia and the idea i can do a better job now then 15 years ago

So wich kit is it?

This is the 2000 rebox version of this kit
The kit was "born" in 1983 so 3 years older then the modeller building it but for the age i think it looks pretty good
It was released/reboxed several times over the years both under the Revell and Monogram names
The last time was in 2015 under the Revell name as a limited edition

And that is the kit and what i will be using for the build
Just one more night of sleep to go and then i can start

They are big indeed
About 40 meters long in real life
The power of those engines must be huge as i have seen a clip where grown up get tossed around like rag dolls
But then again they where walking behind it while it was about to take off
There are some smaller kits of it aswell
I just wanted this big bird again ,i missed it for many years

I have quite a large bench actually
2 120x80 cm tables
But these big kit boxes take up quite a lot of space
I started with the HE-111 today and then the B-1B is next or the T-10M i will be building for the Cold War GB
Then i will have enough free space on the bench for this big bird

Good luck with this! I have one I am in the process of building myself. Started long before this SIG fired up. I had put it to the side for a bit. May fiddle with it while I am doing my build here.

I hope to get a bit of a start on it today
My Heinkel build is at a point that i need to start painting so this one is next to get the interior build up
Up to the point i need to paint it anyway as i have the colored pe for the cockpit
But with the Lancer i also want to have the landing gear bays and bombbays ready before i start building up fuselage parts

One recommendation if you hadn't considered it already, would be to use the SAC metal landing gear set in place of the kit flimsy plastic ones, plenty of strength and more detail too

I have thought about it but no shop i know has that set at the moment
I was planning on drilling some holes in the landing gear and adding some metal or rod in it to make it a bit stronger

They are some sort of short range air to ground missile (atleast that is what i was told)

And everything was primed along with the parts of the Heinkel HE-111

And that is where this (and the Heinkel) build is at right now
I hope to get some painting done in the next couple of days but i also started the T-10M build for the Cold War GB and currently there are a lot of parts cleaned but still not assembled on the bench so i need to take care of that first

I agree it adds a bit of detail but most will be hidden once it is assembled
The most exterior parts are those small fins near the tail and static dischargers wich hopefull don't fall off

It's going great, but you might have to order some paint. That's a lot of kit.

True ,it is big but as i am going for just the grey finish that the Lancers currently have i ordered 3 bottles of the H305 wich is the FS color i need
It looks a bit light but on a black primer it should work
I started painting today and the base colors of the interior are done so just detail painting left to do
But during the gathering of the paints i need for my builds i found i may have to visit the LHS soon ss i don't have enough paint for the Heinkel

I find the armor pe a bit harder with parts like ammo tubes and working hinges
Those take practice and patience (wich is in short supply sometimes)

So it is time for another update
I managed to make quite a lot of progres the past 2 days and i don't want to jam all of construction in just 1 update
So this will be for the big parts of the construction and the next update will be for the detailing ....well that is the plan anyway

So what happened since last time

I started out with basepainting the interior parts
H308 for the grey bits and Tamiya XF-2 flat white

For the missiles i used some ordinary paper wich i rolled up into a tube to mask the centre of the rotary pylon
Then i used H330 grey as the color for the missles

Then the bomb bay interior parts where painted
I used modelcolor khaki and orange brown for the wires
The dark wires where painted with dark rubber from Vallejo's panzer aces range

While that was drying i added the colored pe in the cockpit

And everything was gloss coated with Alclad Aqua gloss

I used 2 Mig productions washes for this
I used the dark wash (brown but almost black) for the wires and all the grey parts
And neutral wash (a sandy grey color) for the white parts

Once the last bit of the thinner was dry i started to matt coat it using Vallejo matt varnish (the UV resistant one)

For the weight that needs to be added i used some ordinary nails
Those where packaged in some masking tape and then taped and glued to the sides of the fuselage

This part is very easy as it only consists of 7 parts

And the upper piece was glued on
These are very big and relatively thin parts so they warped a bit and had to be forced in place
I still had to remove quite a big seam on one side though

The engine parts where put together with the exception of the nozzles as those will be photo etched parts wich i will add later on

I placed my 1/48 scale Flanker and Fulcrum next to the Lancer
The Flanker is a big fighter but the Lancer is easily double the size in any direction

And that is all i have for now
I hooe you like it so far and maybe someone else is going to build one of these monsters (who knows maybe i'm not the only one ready for the nuthouse )

It is a option to keep those doors closed ofcourse but i wanted them open on this one
They are pretty big so when they are open it allows for a good view inside
When you pick this big thing up anyway

I had to do quite a couple of touch ups though
But i tend to add a little bit of water to Vallejo paints to thin them a little
They flow better that way making painting easier

Yeah they are a bit on the huge side
I think it is 90cm (3ft) long and 86cm (2 ft 10 inch) wide with the wings forward if they are folded back it is about 30 cm (1ft) smaller

I have been looking around for other planes that are like it like the B-52 but it seems this is the largest 1/48 bomber as a injection molded kit
There are B-52 kits in 1/48 but those are vacuform kits and i can't make that work as well as a regular kit (as my miniart buildings have proven to me)
