#25 ICM 1/48 Junkers Ju88 A-5

#25 requesting radio check

Right, let's see if I've worked out and understood this Flickr business. Bear with me.

This is the kit I've chosen to mangle.



The box top has taken a bit of a battering after loitering in the stash for a wee while. Underneath the box lid is this:



Exciting. This is all of the plastic bagged up tightly:



Aftermarket wheels, canopy masks (this thing has a lot of glazing) and seatbelts.



Reading material:



The Maciej Noszczak book is superb as it includes lots in drawings of different variants, sets of scale drawings in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 plus colour schemes and a set of decals.



This is the scheme I've chosen as it was based in the Mediterranean and has a skull and crossbones on the nose.



I've always been drawn to the Ju 88 as it was the Luftwaffe workhorse performing a wide variety of roles throughout the war. It's not a looker like the Mosquito but it has a certain appearance of deadly menace and purpose like so many German WWII aircraft.

Hoping to make a start on this soon so just putting my marker down. I've got a Mosquito on the bench at the moment that I'm building for Tim Hedworth's GB over on Facebook and work is going to get very busy over the next few weeks. Very much looking forward to taking part and seeing everyone else's builds take shape. Thanks to Scott and Stokesy for setting this up and to Paul and Lee for letting it run.

Apologies for being late on parade. A few loose ends to tie up etc....

I'll preface this by admitting to being a weekend, recreational Warbird builder, where anything more complex or time intensive than a 1/48 fighter has the mojo looking for the exit doors.......

Having said that, I've started, I'm persevering, and I'm having fun.

Cockpit parts were assembled and primed in Alclad black.



The interior was sprayed in Vallejo RLM02. Not the kit colour call out but it's what I'm going with.





Details were picked out in acrylics and everything was dry brushed and gloss coated.

Reference pics I have show grab handles for the machine gun mags and these were made with painted masking tape.



Sliced up with a sharp blade and stuck on. A little over scale perhaps but close enough for Jazz and it hides the remains of the sprue gates.



While I was at it I decided that the crew could do with some creature comforts and seat cushions were made out of Miliput and rolled with the textured end of a blade handle.





Seat harnesses are in the process of being assembled and bodged in. Turns out that expensive modeller's CA loses it's tack after a while so need to pick up some common or garden superglue tomorrow (other adhesives are available).

The cockpit floor was sprayed and dry brushed to represent a wooden surface.



Bloopers. This build has not been without it's errors. I added some glazing a bit too early as I am a numpty but luckily the piece is symmetrical and I used the mask for the opposite side to protect it while the cockpit is being painted and weathered. Afterwards, I will have to carefully remove it and re-use it for the exterior on the other side. There is also an oxygen/hydraulic? line that runs along the starboard side of the cockpit and attaches to the instrument panel. Due to not carefully reading the instructions and being a clumsy oaf, I shall have to jerry rig that up somehow.



ICM were famous for their cheap Spitfire kits that contained detailed Merlin engines that were a faff to assemble the cowlings over. I'm delighted to report that their mania for details is carried through with the radio antennae molded on to one side of the fuselage.



My example has already taken a battering. There's two hopes of this surviving intact and Bob is on the golf course.

Having said all that, I do think that this is a lovely kit and I am enjoying it so far.

It may not look like much but this represents about a week's worth of evenings so I'll be back with some more in a bit. I'm really enjoying following everyone else's builds so far. Great stuff.

Had the same thing happen to mine! Not sure if it was damaged in the box, taking out of the bag or placing the part on the bench, but it was broken in the same place. My kit plastic does have a soft, brittle feel about it.

I now have a piece of white tack that lives on the underside to protect that antenna piece, so far so good!
