Brutal hey. Just painful to leave it so bland
I felt the same way when I did the Sea King Helicopter...so added waaay too much non visible detail :shifty:
For the instrument panel, I just copied the shape onto some thin styrene, drilled out the holes, painted it black and rimmed the edges with Molotow chrome. The some white glue into the holes and some generic decals for dials from the back.
Simple solution

Some more additions to her insides
This beast had a large ‘warm air tube’ running up her starboard side. I imagine it was to keep, the boys warm up at altitude...or make tea
So here is one portion going in
Image

The navigators desk station just behind the cockpit. I added a fictitious panel above to cover a nasty ejector pin mark ;)
Image

As I add the details to Starboard side, I glue them down and fit the opposite side dry. I am hoping that the port side will then just drop into place
The hair ties just hold the sides together while the bulkhead glues to the starboard fuselage. I chucked a wing on for size confirmation

Seeing your Stirling in front of the paint booth, me thinks my tin pot booth is no way going to house my Lanc! :eeek:

Really don't have £300 for a Benchvent booth right now :bash:

The cockpit is looking nice mate, good to see a bit of the Scotty magic going on in there.

Gotta say though, that is one dog ugly looking aircraft. Whatever happened to - if it looks right, it flies right eh? The designers must have decided to build the nastiest looking plane they could think of in the hope that the flak and fighters wouldn't go near it for fear of catching a bad case of the fuglies!
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

The weather is nice and you must have some cardboard boxes from moving. So make up a little cardboard 'booth' big enough to fit the beast and spray outside
And she is NOT ugly, she is just attractively deficient, in every respect. So deficient, she is beautiful

Navigator space, chair desk and map.

Behind that bulkhead will go the flight engineer seat and instrument panel on the starboard side and the radio operator station on the port side.
Then that will be it for the extra details I think

I am delaying making the gunners and sealing up the fuselage as a I know the work is cut out for me with putty and seams
Time ain’t the largest asset at the moment either
You guys are so far ahead of me :shifty:

Thanks guys, it is coming along just picking away at it after my nightly chores are done
About as inaccurate as one could get.
Hard to get a straight pic of exactly what you want, images get reversed or have no reference.
The moulding of the Airfix is different from the Italeri kit so shows things on opposite sides of the fuselage interior. I chose to do it this way whether correct or not just so I was adding detail to the starboard wall and could keep test fitting the untouched port side. Radio operator is port side so that effort goes out the window.

A lovely painting of the flight engineer at his post..notice the navigator at his map desk on the port side :bash: :wall:
Image

Then a colourized pic of the flight engineer on the starboard side behind the bulkhead
Image

and then a b/w pic looking aft from the cockpit
Image

I get caught up reading and following links and stories about my subjects as I search for details. I guess that is the fun for me in modelling, especially with military subjects. The stories, horrors and humanity can be quite sobering.
Case in point: One flight engineer was the only survivor of a Sterling raid in Denmark after a direct flack hit and the plane exploded.... he was blown out of the aircraft still strapped into his chair. The locals found him, nursed him back to health and hid him from the Nazis.

Same with me mate. When I'm working on something historical (as opposed to sci-fi) its as though I have a piece of living history in my hands. It fascinates me beyond what is essentially just a bit of plastic and glue. When I lose that feeling, my mojo goes and I lose interest in the hobby. Thankfully its only a passing thing and my passions soon return.

Working on these Bomber Command aircraft is a case in point. There's a real poignancy about them. Yes they were instruments of war but somehow they also showed what is best about us. Sacrifice, bravery, a willingness to stand up to tyranny. That and being absurdly young too.

One of my favourite novelists is Robert Radcliffe and he's written a novel about the Dams raid. Its called 'Dambuster', part love story, part history, the depiction of the raid itself is highly accurate and incredibly evocative. I would recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in historical military fiction.

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Really is the fun part of new age modelling...using the internet to search kits, PE and such, but then also the stories photos history beyond that as well.
It is amazing what is on the net. I was reading a page about the diary of a bomber ball turret gunner that Anders posted in his build and it was just frightenly fascinating
If I don't have that connection to a build it just isn't as fun....as Fridgy described

Ok what did I finish off this weekend  :
Flight engineer’s starboard side. I think this is it for interior detail...can’t see squat inside
Image

Then I tested messing with the windows...crystal clear vs kit glass windows vs 560 Canopy glue..left to right in the pic.
You just stick some in the hole on a tooth pic and move around until it all joins and fills the space
Image

Then I masked up the canopy ála BOB M in preparation for a BMF cover
Image

She looks kinda cool with the birdcage cockpit glass
Image

I will post a little hockey thing in the w/e goals thread..... ;)

So which gets you vote?
Hard to see a huge difference between them on my phone screen
The lower row window to me looks the most glossy and glass like

And um... it may just be me... so forgive my confusion here.... but what are you doing with the office glass?
Wouldnt you usually mask the windows not the framing??

Its been a long day...... be kind if im missing something glaringly obvious

I believe his plan is to cover it with Bare Metal Foil and use the tape as a cutting guide, the remove the tape. And thanks for the credit Scott, but the real credit goes to Paul Budzik:

Ha, just skimmed it again and noticed he only uses the tape when he sands away the frame detail..

Thanks everybody
Those are the kit rivets and surface detail from the '60's mould. I am going to try to keep as much of those details as possible when doing the seams

Yes the tape is a guide for canopy. The lines in the canopy are kind of weak so the tape will help define them and act as a guide when I use the BMF just like Bob showed.

The interior glass all kind of looks the same weather white glue or clear plastic. I think I will do the glue/Crystal clear stuff as the kit windows will pop out too easily especially after the fuselage is assembled.

:cheers2: for looking everybody :D

Loving the interior and the masking tape trick. Really taking shape.

Hope you finally kick the flu into touch and get some bench time.
