Enamel wash causes frosting of varnish coat?

Hi there,

I noticed recently that enamel wash causes white spots on my varnish coat (is it so called frosting?). I think this isn't supposed to happen. My steps are:

- primer
- base color
- varnish (flat clear)
- applying enamel wash
- waiting ~1 minute
- washing off with a brush / cotton bud

Do I miss here something?

I have absolutely no idea mate, what colour of wash were you using?

What thinner are you using for your matte coat ?

It looks to me that you are rubbing thru the top coat along with a reaction between the products, especially on the Tamiya coat as they are lacquer based. What type is the primer and base color, acrylic/enamel/lacquer? You want to make sure they have cured (longer than dried) before putting a clear coat on. if you are using solvent based washes, like enamel, you need to have an acrylic clear coat that won't react to enamel and the thinner.
