WOW, you are right about the memories.... I remember building a couple of these as a child when I lived out on a farm. Afterward I would play axis and allies by posing them on a hill and taking turns shooting at them through my upstairs window with a BB gun. Of course the allies always won.

Oh yes, I had most of them, used to love the 1/76 figures I had hundreds of them, well I had all the sets especially liked WW1, Waterloo and American War of Independence. The thing with the kits though is some will have the classic poor fit the HMS Belfast was a good kit as I remember streets ahead of the HMS Ark Royal. As I remember there was a good few kits released in the mid/late 70's that were really quite good, the ones that spring to mind are: -

Spitfire VB, Douglas F4D - 1 Skyray, Grumman F - 14 A Tomcat, MRCA Panavia 200, Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star, German E-Boat, Vosper 73 ft M.T.B., Prinz Eugen, Moskva, Honda CB750, Suzuki TM400J Cyclone. There're others but the above I actually had, I'm not saying all the kits before this were all poor but these for me were a step change in quality and fit. I absolutely loved Airfix I had a large proportion of their range, that all changed once I discovered and could afford (with my nan's help bless you ) Tamiya in the late 70's.

I'm not sure I really want to re-buy them though

Who would want to buy them at all now. Look about modeling has progressed so far...nobody is going to go back to the bad old days.

Great question, the moulds have been quality checked & refurbed, but I suspect this a blatant pull on modellers of a certain age sense of nostalgia and rose tinted memories?

The companies going to go under....they need to look forward...be progressive

It depends on what's available elsewhere. I've just scored a Kamov Ka-25 Hormone that no other manufacturer seems to make these days. There are plenty of Ka-27's and Ka-29's but the 25 appears to be all but forgotten now. Ditto the Handley Page Hampden (which is coming in the Airfix 1/72 VC awards box + Blenheim MKIV, Fairey Battle and a Hurricane). The Hormone, Hampden and Blenheim all fill gaps in my building themes (Russian, RAAF or strategic bombers). The Hurricane will do for the RAAF builds. I know they're flawed but I think I have the know how to make a decent model of them these days. I know I'm in for a fair bit of sanding down rivets, filling gaps and adding much needed internal details. There's aftermarket stuff that will help in the detailing as well that didn't exist back then. So I'm game.
