I was enjoying the stunning pics until you got to the bees. Found myself wanting to run away, far away, and very fast!

Not a fan of bees

Fuzzy Bees=good
Shiny smooth Wasps=bad

I was standing right next to the sidewalk in shorts and t-shirt as he opened the hive...about 40,000 honey bees. Not one sting or bother.
Wasps/hornets they would bite you repeatedly just for the sake of it...those are the B-stards of the hymenoptera order

Little more house work for me this Saturday
Firstly I am making a spraybooth vent so I no longer have to dangle my hose out the window like a perverted caveman
So cut a hole in some thin plywood, painted it black to blend with the house and put together a vent hole in the window screen


In place


And with the spray booth back in place and she tested out fine

I will freeze my nuts off in winter, but no longer shall my hose dangle

Second job, the woodshop/dirty shop/tinker space whatever you want to call it.
First cleared out some boxes of junk to the garage for some room to work in, vacuumed everything and got rid of some cardboard floor protection. Then mounted the feet on these base cabs and got the top cleaned and into place.

The white board is a ledger to put up and give me a baseline and support for the two upper cabinets, one shown on the table. Just trying to figure the symmetry of those uppers and leave some space for some shelves in between
Tired now and it is dinner soon

It was all part of my master plan..muhahaha
Those screw spacings are what saved my bacon.
The master shower is on the other side of this wall and I have proven, in the past, to have a tendency to find water pipes when hanging stuff up
The guys did a great job of putting up the plywood and leaving an idiot's guide to finding a stud...me being said idiot

It does have a lot of potential your new space. Wood work does make a lot of dust so I can see what your hinting at.

For a couple of weeks now after work, I have been picking away at making some workshop shelving. Not the easy way mind you, I have to do it the hard way.
Recycling plywood I saved from the house build...sanding, filling defects and edges, oil priming it and then latex painting. It took a long time to get the wood even half decent and I will still have to do some touch ups. Other than my time I have not spent an extra penny on this, everything is materials I had.
So these are two drop shelves off the upper cabs...more shelving to go between and on either end, but I ran out of hardware to hang those.
Just ordered some blue anodized bolts from eBay so will match the hardware to the cabinets




Nice enough weather that I could have the Apple Music blaring Pink Floyd from the ceiling Sonos speakers, open up my shop doors and the side doors to the garage to use the drill press and paint in the vestibule area. Lovely.


I listened to the live show and heard Dan comment on someone’s renovation...”hire a man” yep that would be the smart way to do it really

Nice work on the shelves, but I am cringing upon hearing about all the seam filling and polishing.
I am about to add another shelf, but I bought all the supplies . In my defense 3m planks aint readly available and I needed the shelf brackets as I couldn't make them myself. The type I need are the slotted rail type because I need to screw to the wall noggins which are above the shelf level....I shall take pic's.

City bylaws here are stupid strict about in ground pools and the wife is not really a water person so no inground for us
Space is to have a hot tub, but this was a temporary measure

As you can see My gardening skills suck and it really does need a bit of care. I did chainsaw the palm at the other end as it was pushing the sides in.
Shame about the city bylaws, but I guess they are there because someone was stupid and now we all have to wear it.
I'm supposed to have a pool fence with self shutting gates and the like, but I have no young kids here so I haven't worried. Although when The place gets sold when I retire I will have to get it done.
I'm not really a water person myself, but the missus loves it.

Keeps the room super cool so it is one of the favourite rooms for my big furry puppy to sleep in

They are all over the first and second levels of the house in the ceilings
Guido knew I would be hot working in there so gave me two vents. Not loud at all.

Must admit I was surprized AC existed in Canada. That AC system must be housed in hollow log....you wouldn't need one any larger Thought it was more like chop another forest down and keep the home fire stoked. Gotta be a reason why 80 % of Canadians live on the USA border ( wanna be Americans.. ). Whilst fending off mooching bears.....Yogi's mates.

So interestingly, we have been getting warmer and warmer in our summers and colder with more snow in our winters. Most houses never had a/c before, now it is much more common around here. Same with cars. Part of that is expectation and technology advancements, but I wouldn’t have a house or car without a/c.
Seems to be a pattern. More fires in the summers and serious winters. Pattern of global weather changes, extremes of weather patterns. California is drying out and we are heating up.
Of course if you don’t believe in science and have lived your entire life in opulence in a large metropolis city, you might not agree.

As digger said ours are much larger. On gas ducted heating the minimum size we use is 200mm (or 8inch for you mericans), 250mm for reverse cycle air conditioning and 300mm for evaporative cooling

Yep the weather here has been in a declining rainfall trend now for about 25 yrs. The dry years are now exacerbated by global warming I believe. If it gets any worse it may become unviable to farm in the same way here. Note to myself ...must sell out before that happens.
The people in St Johannesburg might be recent converts....all their water supply dried up last summer...no water in their taps.

I notice the house ventilation vents much more than the a/c vents. I think they are all 4" lines

Spent a weekend day in the shop messing it up
My anodized blue bolts arrived so I installed those into visible areas of the upper cabinets



Left side has them, right side still steel ones


Then I tackled the French door framing...that somehow the weasel finisher didn’t do



I had to hand plane some edges of the door frame that were proud of the plywood and shim other areas that were inset
Then some Douglas fir and a trusty dozuki hand saw I cut the mitres...not too badly I might add
Now of course either the top ledger of the door or the top board was not straight so there was a huge bow in the middle
I got a couple wood clamps in there and reefed it into square then nailed like a looney with the electric nail gun





Lots to cleanup still, fill the nail holes, seal the wood and get some proper blinds for the doors.
I made the little white dog bone hanger on the RHS for my daughter when she was young and cute and loved it...now she is a disgruntled teen and doesn’t want it in her room I don’t have the heart to throw it out, so will use it as a key hanger

My daughter is now 26. She went from when we divorced to coming home from school ringing me up to talk about her day ( pee'ed the x off no end ) to not ringing and not having much to say when I rang once a week. Too now wanting to come here after Xmas for 6 weeks and make sure I'm eating right !
It all goes round and sorts it self out as long as you hang in there.

Ok wow, I haven't posted anything in this for over a year. Yikes!!
So Dan's cave and some other facebook guys have inspired some more workshop renos.
This past weekend, I have:
1.Removed the builder paper on the french door and installed 5% tinting film...not perfect and likely have pros redo it, but good for now






2. Then I got to finishing the middle shelf and blue backing on the upper cabinets
Still due for a sanding and second coat of white




I added some hangers in the middle for a collection of rulers etc. that belonged to my deceased parents. My dad's rusty square and T-square and all my mom's sewing rulers.


I also cleaned off a flat space and polished up a laser cutter (Emblaser I) that a very good Texan sent me. Got some computer things to figure out before she gets fired up


This past summer, I was supposed to clean out the garage, get shelving and cabinets, tire and bike holders, wood storage. NOPE
Also was supposed toget all the cabinetry done in workshop and make a bench and hangers in the front entry. NOPE
Well I will keep trying to pick away at it all

Mate cardinal mistake.... you made the list of jobs too long. Never seems like your getting anywhere. Make a short list and a second list of jobs completed and never destroy that one. After a while it looks very impressive.

Found some new worktop wood for this space.
Was thinking maple butcher block, but it was going to be north of $1200 just for those let alone the base.
So I stumbled over these eight foot long Acaia wood bench tops for $250
I am planning to do black metal pipe supports, here I just plunked it ontop of the Home Depot bench
They are a bit narrower than expected, so my wall supports will have a little inset tool well off the back to get the width I want
