Used my Friday night to get started on the Black Dog pilot figure.
Image

He is going to be holding a damaged prop. Citadel is what I am using for wood paint, mixing these three colours and then wood grain with the darkest brown kinda drybrushed onto the brush stroke lines
Image

Mounted the figure onto a lead weighted cork and got the prop pretty much finished...I cut up the right end to look as though it had been hit by something.

I have some pretty extensive diorama ideas for this one if I can make it all work out.
I may take some longer time than the gb runs
Not really interested in prizes or winning anything so will kibosh my entry so as to not qualify for that kinda stuff...thus no pressure and let others take the forefront. I love the motivation of the group build as we work on similar topics, just backing away from competing.

Got stuck in on the first pilot figure this morning
These are my research models
ImageImage

I started with a Ultimate black prime...very thin dusting
Then did an almost dry brush of flesh on skin areas with Ultimate Red Oxide and White mix..this bases the skin tone and let’s me layer on top

Image

Image

Image

Then a dry brush of Ultimate gelb for the clothing and darker oxide/gelb mix for the boots
Image

So far this is kinda fun. I will start building colors on top of these...likely Citadel and Vallejo

Well this makes a change, one normally starts with the cockpit.
I might save up a buy a Wingnut Wings plane, but I shall be on holiday soo so it will have to wait.
Love the damaged prop. :thumb2: :thumb2:

Ya well I think I am a bit intimidated to get started into the actual kit :shifty:
I will likely skip forward and do the kit’s engine up first as I know what I am doing with engines

Ok, walk through this engine build up with me

Image

Now the instructions for the engine have no step numbers and read starting left side top to bottom, not left to right across the page like one might expect : ok no problem, we can handle that and not a big deal as it is obvious once you look at the steps that need to occur. I wrote out the color call outs...well because it is so hard for them to just write the damn color in. No problem, lots of manufacturers do that annoying code BS in instruction. We are all good, right?? :shifty:

All the parts are on one tidy sprue, nicely moulded. Wonderful WingNuts
So let’s cut the heads off the sprue...have a close look at the little gate attachment points (red arrow) and how far along they extend inward. And what are those chunks (blue arrows)? Ejector pin marks of DEATH!!!

Image

When you cut those parts off the tree with your super sharp special cutters, cause this is a freaking expensive kit and you don’t want flash, it leaves a little residue plastic on the inner, intimate surface of each part ie on both sides where they are supposed to join, not the external visible area of the part. WTF, that doesn’t let the parts seat :jd:

Image

Are you kidding me. When I started with the oil pan, it had freaking HUGE chunks sticking out blocking from seating. I thought they were guide pins or something they were so big.... but no just huge extra plastic chunks blocking the fit :bash:
On the heads, the excess plastic spots on each side of the inner part of those tube shapes will stop them from sitting tight :wall:
WTH. I honestly expected more as this is tricky extra work cleaning them off as those damn tube things flex and want to break off when you file, sand or scrape them.
This kit better improve from here on.
I have the Roden engine, bet it doesn’t have any of this crap to deal with

Heads and oil pan put together and then put up on my engine stand. Looks like I need to do some seam putty hey
Image
I don’t know guys, not impressed so far spectacular WNW, hmmm
Call me a heritic, but that is more work than need be

The prop and figure look great mate :th:

Hmm :wtf: I do share your points over the fit of the engine parts base on what you've posted, they aren't what I was expecting from WNW  I've got this kit in my stash and a few others which I plan to build over the winter, I'll let you know how I get on.

It looks like the cylinders haven't seated correctly on the crankcase for some reason. I've not seen any comments on other WW1 aircraft modelling sites I belong to about the fit of this kits engine parts, it's all the opposite, so like you I'm very surprised. Is it possible you've missed something along the mating surfaces which is holding things off mate?

I had the same sky high expectations....perfection
I can easily sort out the problems of the mould, just very surprised at the sloppy internals of the mouldings that seriously affect fit
For someone new to modelling these could be very frustrating
The external detail of the moulds are gorgeous. I am half way through the engine basics and it looks good. Have just started cutting off bits to super detail it a touch so I am back in my wheelhouse so to speak, hacking away :shifty:

Everything is loose dry fit in that photo..meant to show the seams I had to fill
I had very high expectations of part fit and was blown away by intruding sprue and casting remnants interfering
In my readings, I was warned about such tight fit parameters that all mating surfaces cannot have paint on them or things won’t go together.
Ok, but I didn’t expect sloppy internals. Often my high expectations of things prove wrong and get me in trouble or jaded.

Oh well, More later :D

Wow - you didn't hang about cracking on with this did you?!?!?

Great work on the figure with the prop

Like everyone else I'm really taken aback by the casting issues you've seen on that engine - I thought these were supposed to be flawless!

Anyways - knock it into shape and show it who's boss :pop:

The engine you've built is the WNW one but on the Rhoden stand right? Where did/does the gray stand come from and is the black stand out of the Rhoden kit? :cheers2:

It gets worse Kev

It is a modified Wingnuts Wing Hisso engine
Sitting on a black Roden base and Roden grey stand ..that I had to modify as it had no cross bracing  : :wall:
With a Black Dog resin propellor
The figure is Black Dog resin as well
 :wtf:
I am sure the cork was an Italian Prosecco

Capise?? Clear as mud

I will start the rest of the WNW kit now and this Hisso engine goes into it.
The Roden engine is the Wolesey Viper that will be used in the diorama sitting out

Oh shite :o

My engine will not fit Back into the fuselage :wall:
I don’t mean a couple tweaks here and a nip there....everything I did on the outside lateral surfaces of the heads is way too big.
And I mean WAAAAYYY too big :bash:

So, looks like we are building this out as an engine swap diorama with the Wolesey Viper engine being put in by mechanics in a field workspace.
I have ordered two period workmen and started the second engine
I am thinking they are either lowering the viper into the fuselage on a chain or standing around scratching their heads how it is gonna fit. The Roden kit has an extra stand that looks suspiciously like hoist material to me, so I will likely modify it to dangle either engine off the chain.

Well sometimes things kinda happen and put you on a certain path and this is how it is going to go

Well sometimes things kinda happen and put you on a certain path and this is how it is going to go
That's a damn shame, are you able to put up a pic to show the problem ? Would it have fitted if those enhancments weren't there. Just asking for my future plans.
It is no big deal, will just display the Hisso instead of the Roden
All the spark plug wiring and harness stuff hit the edge of the fuselage so there is no way for it to seat into the locator areas
Sorry can’t do a photo at the moment as I have shaved out the internal cast wires and have primed the entire internals of the fuselage Mr Surfacer 500 in anticipation of painting the interior wood and linen areas.

I will get you some pics of it and of the Roden engine...it is definitely more crude in casting and engineering but will look just fine

Oh know that's not right mate something diffidently going wrong here  My understanding is all the WNW kits the engines are built up to completion first, then fitted into the the air frame, take a look here it clearly shows the engine fully build and out of the air frame have you added more to the air frame than is in these pictures. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/ind ... ent-514322

Holy molars, that is an excellent build reference....in fact very humbling
I think I may set my build on fire now

I used a more rigid ignition wire and my aluminum tubes block the engine from seating down
So yes, I have added more lateral dimension both sides
Image
There are two seating points on the crankcase that cannot go into their holes on the supports
A smarter man would have got the fuslage out to test this fitment before diving off the deep end in construction.
Clearly I am not that smarter man :wall:
Oh well it will be ok. I will follow along with that reference, thank you so much for it :cheers2:

Ah right O, I thought it didn't seem right glad you've got it sorted :th:

I wouldn't start being too hard on yourself ref the link build standard and yours, which isn't the best I've seen by some way :eeek:

These guys have been building these for some time and have learnt all the tricks and where the pit falls are, if I can get mine (when I start them) even close to yours I'll be happy mate :th:

That site is annoying. I keep getting “wait 26 seconds for search” error messages
It is not negotiable for me :bash: :wall:
