ICM 1/35 Model T 1917 Ambulance (early)

This is what i will be building for this GB



Let's take a look at the parts, everything is in 1 bag.





Some nice detail with no obvious flash but there are a lot of sink marks that will need some attention if they are going to be visible.































The decals look clean and crisp



The instructions look clear and easy to follow we'll see when i start the build

































So there we are.

Model T 1917 Ambulance (early) WWI AAFS Car

One of the most numerous and famous cars in the world's history was the Model T produced by Ford Motor Company.
In 1917 it became a base for the ambulance.
It's light weight made it well suited for use on the muddy and shell torn roads in forward combat areas.
Early 1917 production Model T ambulances had been shipped to France for the American Ambulance Field Service.
They were also the most common ambulances used by the Allies during the war.

So time to make a start.
Now the first thing i do is list the paints needed or the ones i'm going to use along with make up any paints that need to be mixed.



This is so i don't need to keep going to the callout section in the instructions.

Right first up the engine, all the parts have been cut from the sprue and then they are cleaned up with some Ultimate sanders.



The engine is now built and ready for some primer.





The same was done with the front axle, the radiator and the fuel tank.









The chassis was up next for the same treatment



Next the rear axle and drive shaft along with the exhaust







Right to build up the chassis i thought i would build this up, prime it then do any detail painting











And finally for this section i added the support bars which needed some very gentle sanding with the Ultimate sponge sanders









The next step is to sort the wheels but i'm going to leave those for now.

Appologise if this is a long post has i've had a good few hours at the bench

I have primed the chassis in Ultimate black primer through my ultimate apex airbrush, this was built up with light coats.
This will then be left to dry for a few hours because the rear of the chassis is in a different colour callout.







While that is drying i'm going to start on the rear of the ambulance.
This part looks like a bench.





This next part calls for a clear part to be added which i will add after the interior has been painted.



Also on the back wall of thr rear there is some sink marks which i will need to fill for this i will use some vajello plastic putty has it may be seen has i have ordered a figure set to go along with and i will have the back open.





The sink marks have now been filled and when dry thay will be sanded.



I will now glue in place the driving compartment floor this will hopefully enable me to glue the back plate in place and in the right upright position, when the filler has been sanded.







There is also some sink marks on the sides of the rear which will get the same filler treatment.

















The next step calls for the stretchers to be made up but in this case i will do them later when the figures arrive has there is a stretcher in these also then i will decide how to proceed with theseand which to use and make up.

In the meantime the sides have been glued to the floot and so far the fit is good.

Back to this update
The chassis, engine parts, exhaust and the rear of the frame have been painted using Revell 79 greyish blue, Revell 83 rust and model air steel.







The figure set has arrived so while the chassis dries lets take a look through that.
There is some flash that will need to be dealt with on these parts.























Next i have primed the intrior of the rear with Ultimate white primer



Then i'm making up the stretchers i will make up all 3 the 2 from the kit and the 1 from the figure set hopefully i will be able to use them all.

Right taking a look at fitting the stretchers in the rear there is only space to put 1 on the bottom has there are slots for the stretcher handles to go, There are no slots to fit these on the top rails.



So i'm not sure how i will pose these yet,
1 will be outside with a soldier on it and 1 on the bottom of the rear has i'm going to have the rear open has for the 3rd one i may not use this.
After looking through the instructions the stretcher on the top sits in the middle of the rails



Moving on i'm going to glue in place the top rear section.





Next up the cab parts, on this part it was time to try the Ultimate customisable sanders, I've cut a small strip with some sissors for this and it worked great.









These parts will need to be painted before fitting has the space will be tight to paint them after fitting, so these will be painted up along with the stretchers.
I have also masked the front section of the roof has this will be a different colour to the rear section
These will all be primed in Ultimate gloss black primer.











Now the primer has dried it was time to add some colour,
The paints used are Mr hobby H-81 khaki, Model air steel, Revell 79 greyish blue, Mr hobby H-27 tan, Tamiya x-18 semi gloss black and to add a little detail i have used some Tamiya XF-6 copper to the box inside the cab.





I'm really enjoying this build so i'll go ahead and clean up the remaing parts and get these in place.

There are a couple of sink marks on the underside of the fenders so these fill be filled with the vajello putty and then sanded.









[ Please note if you are going to build this the parts B24 L/R are labeled wrongly has i found when dry fitting.]

I'm a little confused the instructions show this part fitted to the floor







The frame on the floor is not actually on the kit and the part is too big to fit anyway so i will leave this off.

So now the cab has been put together and the other parts have been added apart from the engine covers which will be added once the body has been fitted to the chassis but i think i'll paint the body before doing this.
I have also fitted the clear parts on the rear using a little TET.

I have now decided to make up the figures to see how they fit together









So after some sanding and gluing the figures are together the best that they will fit so some filling will be needed, I'm not sure how i will do this yet so while i think on they will be left to dry.





I have mounted the figures onto cocktail sticks by means of drilling a small hole with my pin vice i find this makes them easier to hold for painting.



So for the fillinf i have decided to use some tamiya white putty mixed with a little TeT I have used this method before the TeT makes the putty smoother to use meaning less sanding and it dries quicker.



Once dry any sanding needed is done using a small piece of the Ultimate customisable sanders they work great for this.



Now they have been primed in Ultimate white primer this is mainly to keep the white parts white when i brush paint on the colours



While the figures dry I have masked the main body and primed it in Ultimate gloss black.









Over the next few days i have painted up the figures and the paints used are:- Revell 79 greyish blue, Tamiya XF-2 flat white, X-10 gunmetal, Mr hobby H-27 tan, H-81 khaki, H-17 cocoa brown. Model colour Dark vermillion, Model air Khaki brown, golden brown, sand brown and Humbrol 61 flesh.





While they were being painted i have also painted up the main body with revell 79 greyish blue and Mr hobby H-81 khaki







Finally i have prepared the wheels and lamps ready for priming and painting.
