Heads on the viper are longer though the block fits in nicely. It would need some surgery to the engine cover to fit
The radiator would be different as the viper engine directly drives the prop and the Hisso has a gearbox drive to the prop

Particularly Wolsely Viper equipped S.E.5a. which is a recent enough tooling. On opening I found No stand alone engine at all, just some exhausts and a radiator. Only what could be seen from a distance.

Yeah I know no one would be able to see much , but I fear( not really ) that the way they have molded it. It will look like the exhausts are just stuck in a recess rather than coming out of a compartment. Paint will have to provide a illusion. The WNW gear box is much nicer and the magneto ...guess thats what it is. Not that you can see them when it is closed up..

I'm busily researching WNW kits at the moment, I've always had a real soft spot for WW1 aircraft all stems from the BBC series of the 70's called WIngs. From what I've read/seen and looking at my own WNW kits in my stash, I think they go for simple construction of high quality moulded parts, which is where the cost is. Of course they are going to be fiddly as by definition assembling a bi wing structure is going to be harder then mono wing. The real skill is in the preparation, painting and finish rigging etc, they're also extremely accurate and give (in most) variant options again all totally accurate.

Roden/Eduard and others although good don't offer the same level of quality, accuracy or scale as do WNW. Which will enable a relatively new modeller of very average skill level (such as myself) a chance to build a really looking model. With others not only is the quality, detail, scale and accuracy not there you've got to work a lot harder to achieve the same level of finish.

The latter mate you've certainty nailed she's just getting better and better

It is so easy it isn’t even funny...literally five minutes. It is all a program on the iPad
The music is a tad dramatic...haven’t figured how to alter that yet
With a bit of forethought and refining they could look pretty sharp and professional.

This past weekend I worked on the Roden 1/32 Wolseley Viper engine and got her done.
I think it will be part of a maintenance diorama if I can swing it.
So here she is fairly clean with just some fresh oil weathering

She needed a few tweaks, bits and bobs but came out fine.
I made water pipes from brass and oil lines from copper wire...as I broke the plastic kit ones.
The kit PE was good for the wiring so used that
It is a nicely moulded kit with good detail.... just needs drilling out of holes where things insert as parts need a slight massaging to seat fully in holes and such. I made a few pins to get the piping to sit properly rather than just have butt joints.

its amazing how dinky these WW1 engines look. Fast forward 20 years and engines were unrecognisable.

When I went to Shuttleworth last year with TC I was amazed by how flimsy the aircraft looked. At the time they were cutting edge but you could see the light through the wings, the canvas was so tight and thin. They had a couple of Hurricanes there and they looked like monsters compared to the WW1 fighters

Yes, the oil paint is beautiful.
I keep fondling it whilst making parts and am sure to ruin it before I get it clear coated for decals

bothers me too. but I'm going to dive into a Roden or Revel kit after Xmas and see how I go. Got the kits Just have to suck it up and get motivated.

Its 400 grit takes very little effort to polish afterwards.

I got the double sided 400/1000 jobby for $10
I am sure if I toddled down to the El chepo tool store I could find it there, but it is a drive and the traffic and construction in the area has been stupid. I would rather spend my day doing my hobby stuff rather than driving around
So will wait until it ships from China

I have been working on parts for the second viper Se5a with the oil painted fuselage.



So far the tail, a cowling, cockpit seat and back have been made. Not sure how far I will push it for its display
I found a spare set of landing gear sans cross brace and wheels, so will see what I can do with that. There are a plenty of spare decals to decorate her up. All the wood in this viper fuselage is oil painted.



The proper WNW SE5a Hisso plane has the landing gear dry fitted as are all the cowlings and a coat of Ultimate gelb primer on her



Hopefully more to come this weekend. Absolutely a shitty stressful workweek
