GB Subjects for 2019?

Post by Tomcat64 »

As we're well into November I was wondering what ideas people had for GBs for next year working on the assumption that we'll be staying with the three GBs.

As food for thought here's a few anniversaries that come up next year (If I got my maths right):
  • 70th Anniversary of the formation of NATO
  • 50th Anniversary since Apollo 11 landed on the moon - we had the Space SIG last year so this is probably a bit soon to reuse
  • 75th Anniversary of D-Day - anything that took part from any participant
  • 80th Anniversary of the outbreak of WW2 - anything from the early days of the war
There's also been talk on and off about a Formula One build, so how about opening that up to any open-wheeled racer?

Otherwise just looking around my own stash there's tank destroyers, twin-seat aircraft (trainers, civilian or combat) and probably loads of other stuff I've forgotten for the moment :)
Cheers, Neil

I was sitting behind a car with a "Drive Pink" license plate cover. It got me thinking about a "Pretty in Pink" group build where the kits would go up for auction afterwards to support a cancer research site. Any kit in any scale as long as the primary color is pink. You would have to be willing to send your kit to get auctioned off. May be other ways to make it work, but just a thought.

We should revive the Summer Sci-fi dealymabob buildup sig
I saw a" Black and White build" on a video of Telford...ANYTHING either black or white.
Ooo we could call it The Ebony and Ivory Build

Love to see the scifi back, does anyone know what happen with the last one?

oooooh like the Black and white one ...any genre should get heaps of builds out of that

Just throwing this out there and not sure how hard it would logistically. How bout a GB/SIG where a entry fee is required and money goes to Models for Hero's

I posted in the idea of anything but your normal build on the GB page.

This would get people outside their comfort zones. For instance, I build planes. I occasionally dabble in other stuff, but 99.9% of everything I build is a plane. So, for the build, I could NOT build a plane. I have to build a tank. Or a car. Or a ship. Or Sci Fi.

Now I know some of you out there are weird and actually build more than one subject. Imagine that. For you folks, it would be the thing you do the least of.

The builds are supposed to be about sharing and learning. What better way than someone like me building a target and having to go to the armor guys and say hey, how do you accomplish...?

Would be great to get the Sci-Fi build back on the calendar either officially or unofficially - that's been a blast the last couple of years.

I do like the idea of the "out of the comfort zone as well" but as I'm one of the weirdos that builds all kinds of stuff I'd have to figure out what it would be... hmmm... don't have a helicopitator anywhere...

I would renew my bid for 50 Shades of Gray. Any model, any scale, but the model can only be painted in black, white, or some shade of gray.

Ok Mr Picky we are on the same wavelength there
We could call it "Ebony and Ivory and the Grey Between"
The shade of grey title gets people too excited...for the wrong reasons :o

We need to have the participation level a lot higher than the past year
Seems the interest level is waning something fierce for gb's, sig's and forum posting in general

yeah boats, not so sure about them. once and a while when i'm feeling a little cocky, I take a look at the trumpy 1/200 Iowa, and of course the big pontos detail kit.
wood deck
303 pieces of brass
18 sheets of photo etch 29 resin pieces.
I always wake up in a cold sweat that night. if you've never seen the kit go to pontos and take a look at the directions. oh my lord.
anybody that can do that, I bow before you :

Got to say, I'm liking the "out of your comfort zone" build.

Maybe we could take it one step further and assign a genre by a random generator. That way you could literally end up with anything!! For those that don't fancy and going out to buy a new kit, we could always have a swap around. Might be a bit complicated to organise, but not impossible. Not to mention, a great way for people to "meet up", that might not have crossed paths on the forum.

Hmmmm, that might be interesting.

I do know that I would be doing a car, sci fi or a figure. Have never done a figure. Nor a boat...but man, figuring out one that would not take me a year or more...LOL Though I guess a decent sub wouldnt be bad. OK, not so sure I should have pushed this idea. LOL ;)

Shades of gray would be fun, I'd have to make Dr. Strangelove. Amphibious vehicles could be a neat change up. Swedish fighters would be a very cool SIG.

inter war, any subject in service between 1918 - 1939
bi-plane's
training vehicles

I like the potential of the Axis nations idea too.

What he said!

Also:
Gray scale paint jobs (to use a less evocative name) I have just the thing! :th:
Axis nations :th:
Apollo!!!! :th:
Science Fiction!!!!!!! :th:
Large scale (someone started a thread about this a while back and I need a push to build one of my very few 1/32 scale planes!) :th:
Out of comfort zone (I have a car or two) :th:
WW2 in Africa
Figures - any kind at all - plastic, resin, metal, or your own 3d printed creation (maybe a vignette - which I love)
Viet Nam (again) or Korean war
ON THE BENCH: Do I have to say? :(

For a good while, I haven’t had internet access, now I have, my pc has died!😡 so I’m limited to using my iPhone or iPad, which isn’t the ideal equipment for forum posting. Once I get a new pc sorted (I’m saving for one capable of gaming!) I promise I’ll post on here more, dad! 😃

That's a good idea. I think I've only ever seen GBs where the time period is stated in terms of a conflict. This would open it up to more subjects.

Just had a thought, (I know, right?!) a variation on the large scale idea. Big bird vs Little bird. Any aircraft in 1/32 or bigger, or 1/144 or smaller.

Just throwing 1 in the ring, either trains, planes and automobiles or Ships, bikes and sci fi or Tanks trucks and helicopters. You get the idea. Three builds smaller scale but a running theme.

That's an interesting thought

So are you thinking that people can pick from one of the three themes or that they should build one of each of them?

Planes, Trains and Automobiles would give free reign to the car and aircraft builders so might attract a decent sized crowd plus Trains would give something out of the ordinary and might persuade @digger303 to start his railway yard.

Re: GB Subjects for 2019?

How about a spares bin build. You can build anything you like, as long as most of the parts come from spares, plus it has to be completely from your imagination and not a real vehicle, plane etc. Chassis and fuselages etc can come from a kit, but you can raid the spares to build it into something else. Great opportunity for some freaky sci-fi builds.

The Collins Foundation has had an interesting event in past years: The Race of The Century. Not quite what you have here but more along the line of a mash up of vehicles in a race.

Cool idea, BUT, thats presuming a lot of people have massive spares reserves. Like, I could build plenty of missiles on some sprue...LOL

I think I might have another idea. there is a lot of people from different country's here. we could do a home town build, you know something from your country, or if you were in the service something from the time you were in. you know if your from the states, a m-1 abrams, if your from England a spitfire, or Germany a u-boat, Canada you could model back bacon, or if your from down under a koala bear
just sayin

Koala bear might be a lot less controversial either way I don't think my scratch building would stand the scrutiny

Sentinel Tank a Australian design in WW2 of which only 65 were built. It was found that the enemy just laughed and it was too much Of an embarrassment to the war office so production ceased. We never talk about it !
they did in fact have 3 x Cadillac engines which I find awesome. :th: :th: :cheers2:

a couple of idea's I mentioned for previous years...

nose art/shark mouth - I know that it would be primarily aircraft but I have seen tanks with painted teeth
dogfight doubles - Spitfire vs bf109, Phantom vs Mig, Tiger vs Sherman or Ferrari vs McLaren etc.
D for Delta - any delta wing aircraft
rally cars
