Hello everyone

I have been naughty and not started a thread on this build. After teasing you guys that watch the show with only posting on face book I'm pulling the finger out and getting the progress up.
I need to open a flikr account this week so I can start putting pics up. After the stupidity of Photobucket and it's messing up so many peoples build threads (really made me annoyed) I hope Flickr works well

So this is the kit I'm building

So lets start off with how i tackled the interior
Now as with all wing nuts kits the interior is just as much work as the exterior of the kit. You get to apply your rigging skills in here. The wood items are the first thing you must start with painting. Now with this being my first time tackling one of these I had to really put all my wood painting ideas in to practice. There is quiet a few ways to go about this, you can go with hand painting all the grain on using acrylic or oil paints. Now for certain areas that style works, i used it for the large floor piece. I then tried to use it on the upright spars but it really didn't look good

So as this was not working i adjusted my technique. I went for the idea of dragging oil paint across the piece at first using a piece of sponge but later changed to a stiff thick bristle brush. A smooth brush would have just blended the oil paint i wanted it to look like grain

you can also see some detail painting started. As with dragging the oil paint i then went back in to pick out certain grain to give it a bit more of a wood look. This was then glossed ounce the oil was dry.

Next up will be the start of the rigging and getting all the interior parts stuck together

Ok I over came working around the gremlins of using flikr and loading youtube links

So like it said next up was getting the start of the pieces together and getting the rigging started. You really have to plan what where and how you going to do the rigging. If you stick it all together at once you have no chance of getting some of the rigging areas but some of it can only be added once its all built up so the ability of a surgeon is needed. Threading the fine rigging threw the small holes i had pre drilled was delicate and hard procedure. I purchased some of the head magnifying glasses as just some strong reading glasses was not up to the job.

So the first items to add where the control stick and pedals. Now id decide to add brass rod to the rigging to imitate turn buckles but for all the hassle and work they where they looked good. Until it was all put in fuselage and will never be seen, but hey i know its there IMG_3562 by tim ivatts, on Flickr

Next was to start adding the inner frame work and then rig that. A note to self and others always follow the order of glueing parts in other wise you nearly get stuck and have to cut one of them to slide over the floor

So with one side on and all the small bits added you end up with some thing that looks like this

All of the small indents that WNW give on the kit where drilled out to make life easy. I managed to get 10 sections of rigging in once piece with careful planning and having the holes drill out

With that all done i could then add the second side and continue with the rigging (I did say there was a lot rigging I'm even getting tire of writing the word now)
So here is the final shots of the interior all built up glued and R'd

So onwards it moves

With the interior all built i could start getting the fuselage painted and then joined up. With dry testing it looked like there was going to be no real issues other than my own problems. I had glued some of the centre supports a little wonky so some fiddling was needed.
So the fuselage was primed and i then painted the wooden stringers. These where then masked off and the fabric colour sprayed on. I then added weathering using ak panel liner

With that done i could get it closed up. It needed a bit of clamping at eh bottom which made it glued a little odd but that was my own issue as i left the clamps on too long IMG_3643 by tim ivatts, on Flickr
the top join matched up perfectly and only just had the smallest area that needed filling. The wings where slowed in to give it a check to make sure it all lined up well. And to not much surprise it was all perfectly straight IMG_3658 by tim ivatts, on FlickrIMG_3655 by tim ivatts

some of the interior that will be seen. There is still a cover piece to cover up more of this unfortunately

Now mentioning the wings. One the the very very good things with wing nuts is they are all in piece so no worry of bad glue lines around the edges IMG_3708 by tim ivatts, on Flickr

Onwards with the build

Next up is the engine. The main engine is split in two half which isn't too much of a worry, it joins up perfect plus there is no chance of seeing it as the fuselage was going to be closed up around the engine.
Again this was a good chance to practice the skills for later builds as I have to build the british pusher aircraft and they have fully exposed engine so getting the copper jacket in a good colour was quite essential.

Every part that needed to be a separate colour was painted its particular colour

Also in shot is an eduard brassie gun i had in the stash that will go on the front of the aircraft
Also to the left is the round engine grill from the HGW photoetch set. I choose not to use it as did not have a good fixing location so stayed with the plastic item.

engine mounted to the frame. There was quite a bit of test fitting this point to make sure the engine cowlings where going to fit correctly. I did have to trim the top mounts to correct some gap issue.

The front engine cowl was still to have parts glued to it so it was left like this for now

The fuselage decals look so good....I think this WNW kit is on my want list now

I had to hunt the model room high and low to find all the parts. No sign of instructions, so,very glad you can view all the instructions on line.
There is quite a few little bits to be stuck on and painted ow and lots rigging
Lower wings and tail all stuck on. Top wing placed on so I can see how cool it looks

Got it up on it’s own weight and wheels last night. Also started getting the control wires on the rear end

I cut down Albion metal tube to show the turn bucles

Cracking on with the rigging. the under carriage and tail now all done. Gone to be darn careful and not touch them again now

KEV all the rigging material is from ezline. Very good easy to use stuff.

Now I’m onto the wing rigging I had to change the process a little. As none of the wires are running threw or have loops already I needed to look at other fixing solutions. I went threw the WW1 plane books I own, these have been invaluable help when it comes too building these kits. I highly recommend them all

I chose too make eyelets to fix the rigging too. These are made by twisting thin aluminium wire into tight loops, the process is tedious and tiring on the fingers. Make sure they all have the same twist and loop size is key
Here is pictures showing the process of making them
It goes from house wiring stripped down to the single strands. Wrapped around some Albion rod then twisted. I show using a pin vice but it was easier by hand
And this is the end result

In total I made around 120
Now onto the full rigging

If you've not read those books, you'll enjoy them really good for tips and reference. The GasPatch stuff is all very nice but it gets expensive as with all aftermarket, I'm trying to ween myself off AM as I tend to over spend

I’m going to leave the white rigging as is. Ow those books have been well thumbed and have been so much help. I’m really holding back on the am stuff. HGW do loads of stuff for these kits but really don’t think it’s worth doing as most of it is never seen. I get there belts but after that I hold back

52 lines and turn buckles done. Now 52 lower turn buckles
Ow and as I’m typing this I have forgotten 2 long wires.

That’s it !!!!
Spars were stuck to the lower wing using tamiya white glue, this is the slowest setting of the tamiya glues. The top wing was then dropped down all lined up, all rigging checked and safe I took the risk of flipping it over so I could glue the top joins. For that I used tamiya extra quick set. Now it’s all the lower wing rigging.
