IL 2 Sturmovick question

Post by smokeriderdon »

Well, I have come into possession of the absolutely awesome Hobby Boss 1/32 IL 2 kit. I almost never do WWII planes, BUT this thing is too flipping nice not to build. Sooooo...

I am leaning towards doing a white washed version. My question is this. How would you suggest doing that? I mean like were the planes white washed in the field over the green and black camo? How much showed through? I know the Eastern front planes were filthy and fairly chipped. Any kind of guidance would be appreciated. I am finding precious few pics of the actual planes from back then.

thanks!!!

A couple of the guys did IL-2 builds for the "Winter is Coming" GB last year which may help you on this one:

here

and here

I've linked to the final reveals but you should be able to find the build threads to see how they did them.

Whatever White wash is removed through harsh weather / damage would show the original Summer camo underneath.
So, most would do a weathered factory paint job and then your choice of winter white technique.
White wash in the field means any watered down crap they could lay hands on to apply as rapidly as possible as soon as the first snow fell.
It came off pretty easy but needed to if the plane survived the winter.
Hairspray technique would be my choice as it can take a lot off, and not leave it looking dipped in flour.
IL-2 sounds a monster in 1/32 ........ show us , show us
If it`s got a Dragon or a Dwarf in it .....I`m out ! :pistols:

Ooooo, that second one is precisely the image I had in my head. I figured they wouldnt be doing it much different than the Germans did. Thank you sir!

I will dry fit with tape and take some pics. Its a hefty kit.

This has moved up to next project once I clear my bench. A few weeks likely.

This would be a good subject for the hairspray method. Paint all the camo and weathering as normal then clear cote. Spray with hairspray then spray in white paint. Remove white paint as required to create a worn look with a stiff brush dipped in warm water. This is highly paraphrased so search for a tutorial online before trying it. 😜
