Wingnut Wings 1/32 W.29 Brandenburg

Post by Timplastic »

The Brandenburg w.29 was the first monoplane used by the German navy. The plane was a conversion of the w.12 biplane that was used by the German navy already. With the W.29 single wing creating less drag and having a more powerful engine it’s speed and manoeuvrability was improved. It had the role of searching out British submarines as well as taking on the Felixstowe flying boat which it did very well against, that’s where the dualist boxing comes from.

So my kit will be from the dualist boxing as the single kit is now out of production.
ImageImageImage
I can’t ever just build a kit out of the box so picked a load of great products too add
First up is pheon decals, the kit decals are good but these are nice and thin. They don’t include the German cross and there is a slight error on the kit ones so very high chance they will be getting painted on
Image
For the lozenge I will be using the aviattic decal sheet. This is a clear printed decal that will show weathering threw it. Very clever idea and wonderful fabric effect printed on them. The under wing will have a clear doped linen decal again that’s a clear decal so it will show shading threwImageImage

To finish off the detail a selection of different brands are going to be used. The hgw belts and dial facia. Aeroscale dial decals, although the kit items are very good quality so these may be put back. Master barrel barrels for the 2 Spandau front guns. Gas patch parrbelum gun for the rear gunner as well as there airspeed indicator. To finish it off the Taurus magneto and starter switch.
Image
I have started it in the WW1 build but I don’t hold much hope of getting this finished this side of the new year, it will probably be more like late January, but never say never.
I’m now going to have couple of days planning and checking I have all the paints that are needed and work out what parts need what. Mainly which parts need woodeffect

Well that felixstowe is just a monstrous build at least this is a tad smaller, but the extras are making it look a big project. look forward to one day working on the felix

As with all kits ifs the interior first and these wnw kits do not disappoint. There is enough detail to keep you busy for quite a while and you can quite easily spend a long time adding lots of detail but like I learnt on the salmson you are very limited to seeing what I’d threw the openings so you need know when to stop.
The two fuselage half’s had a few ejector pin marks that needed sanding, they where sunken and only just ever so slightly, so a light sanding easily fixed those
The extra detail I have planned is running the file lines from the cut off and fuel tank, only what will be seen nothing more. The main reason for this was the lines are moulded on where the wood will be, so it’s easier to add after that’s been painted. I have also drilled out all the rigging areas so it’s to run after paint.
With all the parts ready for paint some have been stuck on cocktail others will be clamped for easier spraying.

Progress :thumb2:
Keep showing us, looking forward to the wood effect
I can’t remember if you do oil or acrylics or a combo for your wood
Funny as I was so scared of making wood grain, now it is easy peezy. Key is a cheep stiff bristled brush to get that grain effect by leaving behind brushstrokes.
Once I went more sparingly with the amount of oil paint and got the brush to do the effects, then it became easy

I’m going to try and draw the wood grain on the fuselage half’s using a coloured pencil. If that goes well I will also do the same on other wood panels. For the wooden frame I may stick with the trusted oils.
But I do also have the wood decal

Tonight i got the wood effect started. with it being the two largest ares the fuselage i thought this would be a good place to start
going threw my books the was a build of the brandenburg in Vol1 of building wingnut wings kits. There is lots off good ideas and how tops in the book and its well worth getting when building these.
Image

So in the section showing the brandenburg Daniel Surez uses a pencil too draw wood effect. This looks really good and fairly simple idea so ahead i moved

After priming all the parts that are going to be painted wood with Ultimate yellow primer i house some wood colours. I picked out tamiya nato brown and gunze middle stone. The darker brown was sprayed around the edges and the lighter then sprayed i the centres. the lighter colour id not that different from the Ultimate yellow but its a little warmer colour
Image

Next step is choosing the colour pencil too use. These are not the your usual pencils, they are water colour pencils that are from whsmith.
Image

So with the colour chosen i set about drawing out the wood grain. It,s definitely a technique that needs practice, but its quickly picked up
Image

With that all done its now time to get the clear coats on. This is the part that makes it look alive. I started with the red around the edges and then orange in the centre. I then mixed the two colours together that was then sprayed all over. it needs to be taken slowly so you dont louse the detail. When I was happy a clear coat of X22 was applied, not a heavy coat just enough to give it a slight shine
Image

Well it worked out well so i will use this over all the parts that need wood. Will get some more pics of it all finished over the weekend
Have good one guys

With all the wood bits painted they will need to have there details added and a pin wash. While the gloss is fully curing on the wood all the other little bits can get started. There is a fare few parts to these interiors, as it’s been said many times before this part is a kit all on its own. Unfortunately none of the parts are the same colour that touch so lots of individual painting is needed. This makes it time consuming but looks great when it’s finished

I got all the little bits mounted on cocktail sticks and into groups for the colours. Been trying to get the forced light idea working on these. Its sort of like modulation but not, Any way lots of little bits painted going to show the nicest looking parts. Got some masking for the details to do next on may different parts so thats going to keep me busy.
Used the ak extreme metals for the first time and yes they are good will be picking some more of them up over time Image

Work has been moving slowly. The busy Christmas time does suck time away plus lots good crimbo films

So the main work has been masking and painting all the detail.
Here is the ammo drums for the rear gunner Image
Pin wash will help bring out the ammo detail.

This is the main fuel tank
Image
Chipping and pin wash needed

Steering wheel is all done just a pin wash needed
Image

The seat will need quite a bit of work too look like a worn leather. You tube to the rescue with that one I’m sure Image

More coming over the next few days

Looking good Tim
Tamiya clear orange and let it dry. Then brown oil paints and wipe away the excess oil. You can add more, different shade and re-wipe
That gave a great leather look for me

Gosh not updated this for a while. Been slowly plodding away with it. Had quiet a learning curve giving the pilots seat a leather look. I used acrylics slowly building up the different shades. The belts are hgw fabric items with some extra dirt and depth given too them
Image
Image
All the rear items where added and some dirt was added. Image
Finally the rear seat was painted using acrylics again
Hope to get it all buttoned up by the end of the week

Thank you for the comments guys :th:

That is the cockpit being stuck together. all the rigging is done and all parts glued in. I kept the control sticking free to move and im glad as i have knocked it several times and would have surely knocked or broken it off. Next up is the dials for the pilot. i have a mixed set of items to use for that, the HGW dial etch detail and the wonderful Airscale decals if the kit item are not well detailed enough. The punch and die set will come in much use
