Hello Everybody,

I have been lurking around for some time, so I’ll now take the plunge and introduce myself.

Like many I built my first model, the Airfix Spitfire Mk IX JE-J, when I was about ten or eleven well over fifty years ago, and lost interest around the age of fifteen when other more "adult" interests, mainly girls, air cadets and underage drinking got in the way. Except for building some 54mm Napoleonic soldiers in the early eighties I returned to the hobby some fifteen years ago, and have tried to acquaint myself with the many developments since those early days although I am by no means an expert or even a good model-maker. My main line of interest is WW1 model aircraft, starting with 1/72 mainly from Airfix and Revell but more recently including 1/48 from the various Aurora descendants and Aeroclub, Eduard and Roden. I am also interested in 1/72 WW2 British fighters and those of our European allies and have a passing interest in 1/72 British fighters and trainers of the cold war. I also build aircraft I flew in as a passenger on “Air Experience” during my Air Cadet days, although I’ve only four built so far and all 1/48. One is a “FLY” Jet Provost, two “Heritage” resins of the Slingsby Cadet Mk III and D.H. Chipmunk, and one a SMER Tiger Moth. The recent Airfix announcement of a 1/48 Tiger Moth looks a likely replacement for the SMER kit. My other interest is aircraft of 20 Squadron RFC/RAF through the years as my grandfather flew with them as an air gunner in WW1 but was killed in action in 1917. I have built eight in 1/72 from 20 Squadron so far. I have also dipped into small ships, building Tamiya’s E-Class destroyer and HP Models resin kit of the German surface raider “Atlantis”. I also have Airfix’s Severn Class lifeboat and a RAF Rescue launch sitting in my stash alongside sixty or so aircraft kits.

But in all that I find my model-making ambitions always exceed my abilities, and I gape in awe at some of the models posted on this and other web-sites. I am currently working on MAC’s Bristol Scout, and having looked at and read through PrzemoL’s superb build on the WW1aircraftmodels web-site and Planemaker's build here I am fully confident that I will never achieve anywhere near their standards of perfection. I just hope I live long enough to build all the kits I have – regardless of my fairly mediocre modelling abilities. My main problem is impatience – I want to get the thing finished! But as John Symmons over on the Airfix forum said: “Remember, we do this for fun.” That’s going to be my excuse!

welcome aboard. My main down fall with modeling is the damn painting which makes a kit fly or sit in the darkest corner.

We share a keen interest in WW1 aircraft, yours with a personal link, which is very interesting.

If you've not already done so check out Wingnut Wings (WNW) kits expensive but we'll worth it.

Thanks for the friendly words. I too sometimes have a painting problem. I brush paint, but that makes it easier to cover up the cock-ups in the building while at the same time presenting problems depending on the type of paint I'm using (Acrylics for some and enamels for others) and also with RAF style camo patterns. As to Wingnut: I've drooled over their models many times - but the price and the lack of space in my flat make them impossible - unless I win the pools or lottery. 1/48 Eduard are pretty good though.
