Hobby Room Setup

Hi everyone,

All my build work has been put on hold the past couple months, and will be for the next 4 months, since my wife and I have decided to relocate to the State of Indiana (in the U.S.), specifically the city of Bloomington.

We're having a house built and I'll have third car garage bay for my wood working shop and 13' x 17' room for my Hobby Room.

I'm looking for ideas on how to layout the Hobby Room, specially the bench setup. The room will have a window, so I was planning to make and insert that will fix the exhaust port for the spray booth. I've collected many of photo's from the ISM Facebook page showing peoples hobby bench's.

What things should I consider for creating my ultimate hobby room?

Just built a house and missed putting a wall vent in a spare bedroom that I now use for modelling....dumb move.
I have a woodwork shop attatched in the house and put the vent there, but quickly found modelling and mucking about with wood don’t mix well...too much dust!
After one kid moves on and gets his car out of the separate two car garage, I will get my woodworking machines organized there and set the garage up for that

At first the problem is where to model, then it becomes where to display them all, and somewhere in the middle is where to keep the stash.

Don't store your paints or stash in direct sunlight, seems a no brainer but easily overlooked. Check the sunlight movement through the day through the window you mention and make sure it does not shine on the paints etc..

If you are having the house built then plan out the bench locations and have a proper vent for the spray booth extractor put in the wall and not through the window.... UK vents are normally 150mm Dia and oblong 150 x 70mm, I know US vent products are different to UK having tried to google them so can't give any recommendations on brands and fittings etc.. but I would say make sure you get a vent outlet with a fly screen and either a gravity shutter or cowl to stop wind blowing back in...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll make note of the sunlight and paints. Yes, I'm having the home built, so work with the builder to install a vent through the wall. Hobby room won't be anywhere near the woodworking, so I'm good there.

Good stuff. Start a thread and let us watch the progression of the build...it is fun for me to go back and look at my babblings.

I got two work benches from Home depot and put them in an L shape. They were Husky brand, metal with wood tops...good chunky workbench and I could adjust the leg heights. Also got their side carts and drawers.
You guys in the states have tons of bench options with Sears, Harbour Freight, Grizzly and the like
Make your own paint shelves as you need and can fit into the space like Paul has done in his cave
