H&S Ultra dripping from the tip

Post by jmurphy18 »

Folks
I just finished spraying some Splash P2K, Urethane. I cleaned the airbrush with the supplied Splash Laquor thinner. I had used my .4mm needle and nozzle. I fully stripped the airbrush and cleaned the airbrush, cleaned the barrels, openings, workings. I cleaned the nozzle, the needle And the tips & even removed the “O” ring tip on the nozzle and cleaned this area. I looked at the brass tip under the mag lens on my desk and I can see no crack or split. But it still drips small drops of cleaner from the tip every time I put cleaner in the bowl. When I swap the .2mm needle and nozzle no issues so it is the .4mm
Does anyone have any thoughts. AB was new in March
Thanks

The needle is not far enough forward.

Thanks for the reply. I did push the needle all the way in more than once :( I have even used the H & S reaming Tool inside nozzle to make sure I do not have a buildup. I am really at a loss. I am afraid if I push any harder I will split the nozzle

My first thoughts were that you can get a vaccine shot for that
But seriously you either have a small dab of paint in the nozzle, split nozzle or the needle has a bend in it.

Check you've got the correct nozzle, I've mixed my 0.2/0.4 up before now  It's very easy to check the holes are different sizes :th: Or you've mixed the needles done that to check for notches on the end of the needle for the 0.4. :th:

Sorry to hear you're having airbrush woes John, there's nothing worse. Especially when it isn't something that can be fixed quickly.

When you say that cleaner is dripping from the nozzle, is that even before you press down for air? If you've checked the nozzle and you're sure it's not split or cracked, it may be slightly bent out of shape. I've damaged nozzles in the past with reamers, but then again, I have the manual finesse of a mountain gorilla!

Hope you get it sorted.

I am thinking something with that 0.4 needle...maybe a bend in it??
Maybe the nozzle is f'd
It is really odd and a good reason I am just going to get a dedicated 0.4 or larger airbrush and not mess with my Ultra...sorry that doesn't help you

I thought you had a apex for that sort of thing ?
Have you thought about a trigger type. I have a procon boy (Mr Hobby ) 290....0.5 fan for large projects and it is magic. Only thing I don't like is the nozzle is tiny. It's made in the same place as iwata.

If you’re not careful you can damage the brass nozzle using the H&S reamer tool. I did it once before you can check using a magnifying glass. This could be your problem.

Agree with Nev here - using a reamer tends to enlarge the nozzle regardless of how careful you are. Try a replacement nozzle/needle and go from there.

Thank you all very much!! I spent the day detailing full size cars yesterday and part of today. I will go out and look later today. It is going to be 98 again today so I want to finish the car before the temps rise  :? . My other thought is to try the seal on the back of the .2mm on the .4mm and see what happens. I will check all these also.

Nothing better than doing a good wash and wax and full on vac and detail of the interior :thumb2:
My back pays for it later mind you, but I love doing it, especially on a black car.
You use any Griott's stuff from Washington State??? awesome products for car care

Thanks Scott! I was detailing my Maxima which is also black. I am a big fan of Chemical Guys in California. I am trying out their new Ceramic coating wax on the Max. I did clay bar the car and buffed out all the scratches and like you mentioned my back is telling me I am not 30 any longer  But after the wax and and the good detailing stuff the Max looks great and the inside is now also spotless :)

@digger303, @Kevthemodeller, @alextheblue @Twokidsnosleep @Nev @onemac

Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer my question. I did try your suggestions and here what I found today looking for the problem.

Needle: Needle is straight, I did check on a flat surface on two different locations and compared against the .2mm needle.
Nozzle: I do not think it is split, I looked under my magnifier on the desk and it looks OK...
Needle all the way in. Yes I pushed hard and removed and reinstalled at least 5 times..
Split with the reamer: Well I did not get heavy handed as I was worried about this as it is brass and the reamer is steel. I only got heavy handed with the dental brush cleaning out the inside after use.
2.mm needle/nozzle on a .4mm/nozzle. No I did check they are marked. At least mine are. the .4mm have 4 marks and the .2mm needle has 2 and the nozzle has none.

What I actually found: I removed the seal on the rear of the .2mm needle and installed it on the .4mm nozzle and the drips and the bubbling stopped. The airbrush works fine. Looks like the Urethane or the Splash thinned ate the seal

Digger: ROTFLMAO!!! You made my morning when I read this comment. I had to call my bid and share and he said he could give me a shot if I wanted one...... LOL. No paint in the nozzle I did check twice

Kev: With a last name of Murphy, swapping needle and nozzle is very likely :). I keep them in different locations as I have already done this .4mm and .2mm tip and no flow! I had the wrong air cap on the Ultra. They are different than the Infinity that I just got.

alextheblue: Thanks much! Turned out to be a seal

Twokidsnosleep: Scott, I set the Ultra up to be dedicated to the .4mm setup so I was supprised with it leaked. I just figured out you can buy just those seals (3) for $6.50 so that what I will order

nev: I was careful with the reamer.
onemac: Thanks much. That was my next step!

Great news John, glad you got it sorted. Just goes to show, even the solvent resistant seals will fail eventually. I've got an Evolution and an Infinity and I must be honest, I never give the seals a second thought. Really must got myself some spares as back-up. Lesson learnt. :th:

I had a similar problem i think i fixed this but not sure tried everything with my ultra airbrush cleaning etc then i found that i was screwing the nut thingy at the back without full tightening the nozel and cap, i think this pushes the nozel too far forward and even though the cap screws this down against the needle etc because i screwed the nut at the back first this left a small gap either between the nozel and / or the cap. I.e. i had the needle arrangement set too far forward set by the chuck nut at back of aitbrush. Seems ok now maybe im wrong but it seems to have worked better for me to screw front end together properly then seat needle and tighten chuck. Hope this makes sense it kinda does for me but only just haha I know this is probably fundimental stuff but im no expert and wanted to see if this helps, best of luck :)
i just like throwing paint at plastic and chilling at my desk
