Tamiya T-34/76 1934 prod build

Post by KalebB »

Chose this as my next build.

Tamiya T-34/76 1943 prod

I am thinking of doing winter wash camo on her, I've never attempted it so I think this will continue to push my skills!

So far this is how far I have gotten with her.

Gone smoothly as you can expect from a Tamiya Kit.

Thanks for looking in cheers :cheers2:

It's a T-34, what's not to like! I've also got a 34/76 in my stash, so I'm watching with interest how you get on with this. Winter camo is a great idea, and something I want to try in the future too, good luck :th:

Going together as fast as the real thing did.

Those older Tamiya kits don't age like some brands. They may lack a bit of detail compared to the newer moulds but it shows how far ahead of the competition Tamiya was.

I bought their old Panther and Stug IV some years ago and they were great. I've just picked up their older Tiger II, it looks great and just needs PE grills to pimp it out. Bargain!
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thank ya for looking in sir.

Yeah Tamiya kits practically fall together!!

This particular model of T-34 is my favorite tank. The Mickey mouse, so called for the twin hatches when they stood up

I was impressed with some of the details on it to be honest.

The pre dented fuel tanks and nice casting texture on the turret was pleasent to see.

Thanks for looking in bud  :cheers2:

I also just noticed I flip flopped the production date on the thread title :wall:

How did I manage that

I would think the tanks they had in 1934 had 4 legs, drank hay and pooped in the streets!

Hell with tanks like the T-35 and T-28 being built around that time, they would have been better off with horses to be honest haha

The fuel Tanks have been fitted as well as bits of stowage cleaned up and ready to be mounted after painting.

I do enjoy how the fuel tanks have been Pre-dented. I think it adds a nice bit of realism.

Interesting stuff about those dented tanks. I built the Cyber Hobby SU 85M Tank Destroyer a while back and that had dented tanks too.

I do find it interesting that even up to modern day the Russians still mount similar tanks like this. Its such a low-tech approach but I guess it works when looking at the old quality / quantity question.

Can see the age of the kit though. Don't get me wrong the details are very sharp, but you look at the fuel tanks and the dents look very even and consistent.
Can't wait to see you jazz this up. :th: :th: :cheers2:

Love the way this has come together so quickly - I'm pretty sure I've got one of these lurking in the stash so might crack it out next year and take a swipe at it.

Looking forward to seeing you move this along :pop:

Well I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it right?

I'm sure those fuel tanks are about the easiest to repair/replace compared to other nations armored vehicles

I see those fuel tanks and have always thought they would be always getting holed and a potential fire hazard. With fuel entering the engine compartment if a shell hit the tanks or even stray machine gun bullets. But I must be wrong cause I haven't seen any pic showing that.

I have no doubt that has prolly occurred at least a few times. Chances are there just weren't any war time photos taken of it. I could definitely see it being an issue

yes they did, not sure if they drained the out board ones first though or they had to use enough fuel then drain it into the main tank.

UPDATE

Have now laid down the primer on the ole girl. I used MiG of Jimenez One Shot Gray primer.
First time using this and it laid down beautifully in my opinion
ImageImage

Thanks for looking in! Next step will be some pre-shading with black Vallejo model Air and then the first coat of Vallejo Russian Green

I planned to do that on the panels that wouldn't be bathed in sunlight. Sort of a pre shade kind of thing. I don't know the proper term for it

Black pre shading and first coat of Vallejo Model Russian Green has been sprayed on.

Next will be painting stowage bits to get ready for mounting after the winter white wash has been applied. Still trying to figure out whitch technique I want to do for that. Never attempted it before.

Nothing too spectacular. It will definitely be a bit grimey, a bit of mud effects and dust pigments applied as well as a few washes. Just got some Mig washes in the mail and want to try them out :thumb1:

Well I figured hell, if Mtn dew can coat my kidneys in bad stuff, maybe it'll make a tough primer coat

In yours guys opinion, should I do some light chipping and weathering on the paint before or after the white wash, my line of thinking is a lot of it would just be covered up by the white paint and then just chip the exposed paint after flaking off the white coat. However I figured I would defer to the more experienced builders on here.

Cheers :cheers2:

You could do the green chipping before the whitewash but there is a good chance some or all of it would be covered, what you could do is, do the whitewash and then on the visible green areas, do the chipping then, hope that makes sense :th:

I guess it depends on what you want to depict... if the tank rolled off the production line in bleak midwinter then it was probably whitewashed before seeing any action so any damage, scuffs & scrapes would be through that top surface.

On the other hand if you want to show a vehicle that'd been in a couple of scrapes and then got whitewashed later on then you could layer it by applying some before the whitewash and then some more after. As Tat2bhoy said you will lose some of the initial work by doing it this way but if you have a look at actual vehicles (farm tractors?) it's all layers of wear & crud built up, and some of the wear will be under some of the crud.

Hope that makes some kind of sense :cheers2:

On the other hand if you want to show a vehicle that'd been in a couple of scrapes and then got whitewashed later on then you could layer it by applying some before the whitewash and then some more after. As Tat2bhoy said you will lose some of the initial work by doing it this way but if you have a look at actual vehicles (farm tractors?) it's all layers of wear & crud built up, and some of the wear will be under some of the crud.

Hope that makes some kind of sense :cheers2:

It absolutely makes sense. I can see what you're saying about the tractor thing as I'm around them a lot. The paint does build up and re crack after getting rattle canned so many times. And being out in the elements

I may do a fairly new manufactured tank however. Sort of a fresh built machine right before the battle of Kursk so major wear would be minimal.

Finally got the courage to attempt the winter wash camo.

Went better than I thought and I'm satisfied with it.

Just happy I didn't completely mess it up

I'm just fascinated by the process. Having found a way I like I'm always interested in the processes and results of others. I think I'm still in that mode where I'm trying to embrace just what products are out there.

I can still remember a shoebox full of little enamel tins. No primer, washes were done with spirit added to black enamel and wiped off before they dried. I think I only ever varnished a kit once and that was with a brush! Five years back into the hobby and I've got all these new toys to play with and I'm barely scratching surface.

I understand where you're coming from.

I only modelled for a bout a year when I had to quit to focus on school and my job.

Now coming back to it 4 years later, there's so much I haven't learned

Nicely done just remember to try and think where would the men be going on the tank surface ie the engine deck and how they are climbing over it to get in those sort of areas will get the most worn so you could go heavy on the chipping on those spots and always remember that they did a lot of painting in the field so would re-apply the winter white over worn out places that would give you some tonal variety to the overall look 👍🏻
