Porsche 917K 1/12 MFH

hello to you all
here my first topic on this forum
Curentley working on my MFH Porsche 917K 1/12
work is going slowly because this is a multi media kit a lot off clean up and dry fitting
Where im at the moment
The first step is to build the engine

thats it for now
still needs a few touch ups

it are great kits you have to take your time when building on its not a tamiya but i love it

normaly i build planes so thisis far from my comfort zone but i love every minute off it

Looking great, really super details

I am trying to wrap my head around this engine. It is a flat 12, so six cylinders either side of the box
But 12 spark leads per side.....so two plugs per cylinder????

That's right Scott and only 2 valves per cylinder, really 2 straight 6's bolted together

f your interested Here's one being stripped and rebuilt

That engine is a later type then im building its for the porsche 917/30 but no worries i have that one also in the stash

but that whas somthing i whas asking my self because im not a car guy but that makes it so much fun to learn and doing resaerch on it

Ok I'm sorry for the rivet counter comment. I know when I'm being ignored.....

You were curious about the number of spark plugs. I'm wondering about the crankshaft. I know they would have bolted the piston ends together and opposite each other, but how did they maintain lubrication and not foul up the cylinders at that time in tech history. Pumped the oil I guess, but oiling up the cylinders would have been a problem to solve.

Cylinder oil flooding which in radials causes hydraulic lock on start up it's really an issue with opposed engines. That said slight oil pooling can did happen on these earlier engines, which give a initial puff of smoke for the first few second on start up from cold. This isn't a problem on later opposed engines e.g. Subaru, as better materials and oils allow for tighter machining tolerances due to improved operating stability.

Oil was is pumped, the crank is drilled with oil galliers, which carry oil up through the conrods, to the gudgeon pin/small end bearing and out to the cylinder walls. Excess oil is removed by the oil scraper rings. The fuel air mixture also has a cooling effect which help keeps the piston crowns within operating temperatures. Very basic description but hopefully goes some way to answering your question.

Thanks for that. This is what I was referring to.I didn't know how much of a problem it was or could be.

I would stress it's just a puff see 917 start up they're many clips of 917's starting but this one is closer to back in the day so to speak. This Clip is from the film Le Mans (1971) that made the 917K and the coolest actor ever Steve McQueen an even bigger legends, look from 1.07 onward's

As I mentioned oil has improved massively since the late 60's early 70's. Those still running from mid 80's onward's will highly likely have rebuilt engines and running on modern oils, so the pooling will be less. Even back in the day this pooling had little or no effect on performance, they just used more oil and wore faster.

That is some great information on the early Porsche engines. I know very little about these flat 6's and 12's. More of a V8 guy here as that is what I raced and built. Thanks for sharing the information. Love learning this information.

more stuff done on the engine now step 1 off the construction is done
this is how

it looks at the moment

next part to be build is the rear frame where the engine will come in and afterwards i will make the gearbox and other stuff to compleet this section

next update will not before december the 20 im away for work

yes there are five screws on the underside and one one each side
but i dondt trust that much because the weight off the engine part is high almost 1kg
im thinking to put somthing under the chassie when compleet to prevent bending

All looking good and very nice work. Sometimes MFH provide posts that are fixed to the chassis to take the weight of the model off the suspension these posts also spread the weight.
