New member saying hello.

Post by AirCadet424 »

Hello people,

Just joined this forum, excited by what I see (there are some very good modellers on here) and really looking forward to getting involved. I am mainly interested in aviation subjects, particularly World War 2, though not exclusively and I occasionally dabble with military subjects such as tanks, etc, and also just getting into the odd bit of figure building. I am a member of one other modelling forum though that seems to be dying a slow death with just the odd new post to read daily despite a membership of nearly 8500 members, with the same handful of regulars bothering to give the rest something to stare at and which has become mainly period ship orientated as well, which doesn't interest me I'm afraid (I will shortly be leaving that forum), so I've been looking for pastures new and as I say pleased with what I've found here. I will definitely be posting actively on here, joining in conversation and also showing my own builds, with 'work in progress' updates. I hope that you'll enjoy looking at my work and following some of my builds.

Great to be here,

Kev

    Hello Neil,

Yes, I was in the Air Cadets many moons ago (early '70s!) and I was in 424 Squadron down in Hampshire, hence the numbers in my screen name. Happy days, we used to have a DH Vampire T.11 parked next to our parade ground, with the Goblin engine on a stand next to it. Great fun getting to sit in the cockpit and pretending I was the pilot even though it never left the ground. I have a 'Classic Airframes' Vampire T.11 (with extras) in my stash which I hope to start one day. My dad used to be in the RAF in the early '50s as an engine fitter (propulsion technician I think they call it now?) working on some of the earliest jet engines, where he worked on various aircraft including the Vampire, Meteor and the earliest Hunters and he also says that he got to work on a few RR Merlin engines in some of the last remaining Spitfires and also a Lancaster amongst other things!

Even longer ago for me Kev. I was with 2048 Sqdn at Dagenham in Essex. When I reached the upper age limit life took a different path - I wound up in an RCT (VR) unit before moving onto the Artists Rifles.
Dad was Army (RSF - Glider Pilot - 6th Airborne), one uncle was FAA on Swordfish the other was a tail gunner in Bomber Command who had the dubious distinction of serving 1.5 tours - he started on Wellingtons, got transferred to a Lancaster Sqdn and in the process his records got lost so his Ops count had to restart from 1. He finished the war as an instructor at an air gunnery school.
